It has only been spotted a few times since it was discovered in 1966. Very cool critter. Sweet just spent a fair amount of time reading up on these things. (just now due to your post) Like many jellyfish that live deep-sea they are assumed to be fairly "common" but are basicly aliens to us since that part of the ocean is so unexplored. (we know more about the surface of Mars than we do about the ocean floor, seriously) For a moment I thought it was Stygiomedusa Gigantea (a monstrous sized jellyfish , even rarer) Apparently it was a big confusion if this was an animal at all for awhile in the internet community. Snopes.com (known for its good research and debunking of internet nonsense) was confused as well apparently. Never heard of this (im a closet Zoologist among other things) Jellyfish in particular are quite "alien" this one is wayyyyy out there. Especially the odd organs that seem to "pop out" that Im not used to seeing on jellyfish. If you didnt put the word "jellyfish" or "creature " in the topic, I'd not been sure it was an animal at all. These here are ones I've red about extensively Immortal jellyfish (yep they can, theoreticaly live forever , although not technically immortal)
