DGN Methods of Contact - Obsolete?

I think the only two things that are still valid are websites and Skype?  Maybe this should be updated/revised/killed off?

And wondering what they were?  😬

it doesn't really matter to me what's there because I have nothing other than a phone number and email as ways to get hold of me.  I do have a website which I have thrown in there. never noticed that as an option before.  Then again, I barely look at my profile stuff...

I think they were both apps that allowed you to connect to various services like MSN, AOL, Yahoo, etc from one place instead of having multiple apps open.  They existed mostly in the pre-smartphone era. I haven't used a chat app in 15 years...

I still have a Jabber/XMPP account that I use all the time.  But it's mostly just to talk to my one friend in Wyoming.

 

I don't put that ID anywhere because then I get spammed requests to communicate.  I am happy it exists though.  It is the only completely open sourced option out of all of those listed, and it's also got options for E2EE.

ICQ used to be an OLD ass messenger. Think of Yahoo Messenger, but back when it was called Yahoo Pager. I used it for a very short time. Like it had some extra features but I'm not sure what they were anymore. AIM, Yahoo, and MSN messengers prettymuch snuffed it out of existence I think. Like back in the 90's it was the original messenger.

Well, I was bestowed the title of DGN Admin "Keeper of the Old Ways", so, I believe this collection of referenced contact methods definitely qualify as being under my protection of "old way" to be kept.

 

Decades from now, they will consider this list to be a "historical reference".

It already is.

It's kind of cool to look at profiles to see people's old handles.

 

However, having those fields makes the forum look dated and old, because it is.  The problem with that is it could potentially turn off new members from joining.  Though that's really just their loss then.

I didn’t know what Jabber was until I had to use it for work. I use it every day. But yeah, a lot of those were definitely outdated. I couldn’t even tell you. AIM or my IQ were.
