saechalyn Posted July 27, 2005 Posted July 27, 2005 So we were all introducing ourselves at the department meeting to our new coworker. Our supervisor asked if she had any questions for us and, in a gesture that seemed mildly odd, she asked who had kids and how many. So the people with kids answer, whatever. But then she says, So what about the rest of you, are you married? No one without kids is married. She KEEPS going, "Well, partners then?" A moment of awkward silence and someone offers, "Well I have a boyfriend," in this "not that this is any of your business" tone. A few other people mumble their dating status and then she looks right at me and says "Well what about pets, ANYTHING??" So I finally said "NO, Nothing in this world loves me, OKAY?" I said it jokingly enough, but there was some bite behind it. Some people really need to learn what are and are not appropriate workplace topics.
Shade Everdark Posted July 27, 2005 Posted July 27, 2005 You do not want to get me started on inappropriate topics for discussion at the workplace.
Paper Hearts Posted July 27, 2005 Posted July 27, 2005 My experience is that there are no apt or worthwhile topics to discuss with coworkers. Make no impression what so ever-that's my approach.
Onyx Posted July 27, 2005 Posted July 27, 2005 I like your answer. It probably didn't get through to her though. I find people like that tend to be clueless about how rude their behavior is.
Jarodaka Posted July 27, 2005 Posted July 27, 2005 You could've told her that one time you thought were pregnant, but you just really had to take a big dump. Well, that's what I would've said, anyway.
Fierce Critter Posted July 28, 2005 Posted July 28, 2005 Ummm... Maybe this is going to give you a clue why I can't possibly work in a corporate environment anymore. But I would have asked her what possible relevance that line of questioning had to do with anything, and told her it really was NONE of her business. But that's just my time in the corporate world, age and experience talking. In my younger, more desperate to keep a job days, I might not have said that. Today - yes. I admire you for thinking on your feet that way. Well done.
honeymustard02 Posted July 28, 2005 Posted July 28, 2005 You could've told her that one time you thought were pregnant, but you just really had to take a big dump. Well, that's what I would've said, anyway. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> After that, her face would have been a Kodak moment :woot:
bean Posted July 28, 2005 Posted July 28, 2005 What a bitch...I would've told her I had a collection of bodies in the basement or something...I hate people who feel the need to know everyone's business!
wheresmypiggy Posted July 28, 2005 Posted July 28, 2005 I'm a professional black widow. I kill my mates and eat my young. Saves on the bills you know. That might have detered her from questioning you again.
