The_Dark Posted August 30, 2005 Posted August 30, 2005 I don't have any relatives in the area, but I have a friend who went down to get his mother before the storm hit. We are still wating to see if he got there in time to get her out and to safety. I wish I could take time off work. I have the urge to grab my hammer and saws... a box of nails and all the lumber my truck can carry... There are a whole lot of people who need shelters built about now...
Homicidalheathen Posted August 30, 2005 Posted August 30, 2005 Thats why I like guys like you. When the shit hits the fan....your there. I really really like you DARK.
Lilith Posted August 30, 2005 Posted August 30, 2005 MAybe DGN could hold a collection or some thing for the relief effort, I personally have no clue as to how or where or what to do but i thought maybe we could gather left over buidling supplies, some food, maybe money. Maybe we could make a DGN blood Drive trip to a local red cross and we could all donate blood for the effort. Just a thought if any one knows how to go about this maybe we can talk and figure it all out. Lilith
Guest Game of Chance Posted August 30, 2005 Posted August 30, 2005 I have some buddies down in Biloxi, MS. They say its just crazy there right now. I have another friend who is a bartender on Bourbon St. He decided to stay through the hurricane. Haven't heard from him.
The_Dark Posted August 30, 2005 Author Posted August 30, 2005 Well, I talked to my wife this morning. She is all for me going to help with the relief effot. My boss on the other hand is a fuck stick. If I go to help the out with the releif effort Iwont have a job when I get back. So, when I get home tonight I have to have another talk with the wife and see if she feels the same as I do. If so, then south I go and will look for a job when I get back.

There are other ways to help besides physically going there. Your family depends on you. And the job market is not good enough to count on.
The_Dark Posted August 30, 2005 Author Posted August 30, 2005 I wont do anything lightly... and as I said, I have to talk it over with my wife. Perhaps I can change my bosses mind and at least get enough time off to go deliver a truck load of what ever... I really feel the need to do something...

I just saw the pictures and it looks terrible.
The_Dark Posted August 30, 2005 Author Posted August 30, 2005 80% of the city is flooded and it's still rising.. they are making plans to evacuate the Super Dome... the national Guard and releif agencys are still bringign in survivors from roof tops...
The_Dark Posted August 30, 2005 Author Posted August 30, 2005 You know what I want to know... Where is the world when we need them? Within hours of the Tsunami Americans were sending releif.. where is our aid?
Paper Hearts Posted August 30, 2005 Posted August 30, 2005 I haven't been watching television or listening to the radio lately, or reading the papers-I've developed this near apathy thing that comes from being variously destroyed, through the years. That, and I'm extremely busy, lately...but I didn't know until just now. I'd heard about it from a friend and so started surfing a bit to see if there were any good photos. Looks very bad.
The_Dark Posted August 30, 2005 Author Posted August 30, 2005 "very bad" doesn't cover it. There are over 9,000 people in the Super dome... there is 1-2 feet of water outside and it's rising...the pumps have failed and the levys have broken.... 80 known deaths in one county... bodys floating in the streets of New Orleans....
Head Wreck Posted August 30, 2005 Posted August 30, 2005 i only heared about it of my friend at work today who has family stateside

Brenda Starrr Posted August 30, 2005 Posted August 30, 2005 I'm still waiting to hear word on my friend, Crestin. No one has heard from him due to the phone lines being down. I just really hope that he's safe.
bean Posted August 31, 2005 Posted August 31, 2005 You know what I want to know... Where is the world when we need them? Within hours of the Tsunami Americans were sending releif.. where is our aid? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Exactly, I was wondering this myself...
Paint it Black Posted August 31, 2005 Posted August 31, 2005 I'm sure there will be donations from European countries. AFAIK, The US has yet to request aid from the UN and that is not likely to happen anyways. I doubt we'll see anyone mobilizing to help us with the rescue efforts like we did with the Tsunami, main reason being that where the Tsunami was the nations were not nearly as developed as ours is. Not to say we don't need some help. We certainly are going to need a lot of money.
Reaper Posted August 31, 2005 Posted August 31, 2005 I was listening to WRIF this morning and they brought up a valid point. I don't think there has been any attempt from any other countries, even Europe, to give aid or anything said about the disaster. It seems we pour out the money for other countries, but other countries never even touch us. Same goes for the loans the US puts out. All the money into Iraq and a lot of people in that country want us out. Gas prices causing even more damage. Its all a conspiracy from Mother Nature I tell you!!
Msterbeau Posted August 31, 2005 Posted August 31, 2005 You know what I want to know... Where is the world when we need them? Within hours of the Tsunami Americans were sending releif.. where is our aid? Not to make light of a very serious situation... but isn't that like Bill Gates asking for a handout? I guess it would be a nice gesture for others to pledge relief/help, but realistically, are we not the richest, most powerful country on earth?
The_Dark Posted August 31, 2005 Author Posted August 31, 2005 Talll ya what... You tell the thousands of homeless people down south that... See how they feel about it.
Vater Araignee Posted August 31, 2005 Posted August 31, 2005 This is the exact reason why we need to stop pouring money out of our borders. Lets make sure every U.S. citizen is no longer living 3rd world before we help others!
Fierce Critter Posted August 31, 2005 Posted August 31, 2005 Dark - from the looks of things, too many people going down there without a plan of actually putting you to work could be counter-productive. I would strongly suggest you try to get into contact with someone handling relief efforts down there and make sure there will be a way for you to be put to work efficiently. Also to make sure there will be a way to house you with all the residents seeking alternative shelter. Maybe find a contact with the Red Cross? It really looks like a lot of what's going to happen in the short run will be clean-up and demolition. Probably not much in the way of rebuilding anytime soon. I saw an expert on Nightline last night who said what's basically happening to the houses is the drywall and insulation are wicking water upwards in these houses, so that eventually the entire house will be saturated and eventually require massive reconstruction. I wonder how many houses will be salvageable. I'm living in a late 1800's/early 1900's house right now that my neighbor says reminds him strongly of houses he lived in in New Orleans. We've been inside the attic and are dealing with bathroom/ceiling issues due to a leak around our bathtub. Just a little bit of water has the plaster, grout & wood falling apart like mad. I can't imagine how any of those houses will come through this. I admire your desire to do something. And hope something comes through for you either way.
Msterbeau Posted August 31, 2005 Posted August 31, 2005 Talll ya what... You tell the thousands of homeless people down south that... See how they feel about it. They probably don't give a shit right about now. My point was that we have the capacity to deal with things (financially) ourselves, unlike many nations. Which is why we give a lot more then we should ever expect to recieve. I will say too, that I admire your willingness to jump in and help, but I'd agree with FC... I heard on NPR that people were posting on craigslist.com offering people shelter and that sort of thing. You might check and see if any of the relief agencies are looking for people with your skills.
