DGN chatroom?

I vote negative on the chat idea......just use YIM or AIM.

I don't have that option because I don't use the standard clients. I use Pidgin (formerly GAIM) which has IRC capabilities built in.

I had a chat set up on my webpage waaaaayyy back in the day. Now, IF I could remember what website let me set up my very own chat room account, I could certainly Design a web page to fit it in. It could be a trial/test run as to see who would actually use the chat, and how everyone behaves on there. However, two things getting in the way of that..

First and foremost, I just can't remember where the hell this place is at, it may not even exist as this was like 8-10 years ago.

Second, Sounds like Troy and most the mods don't want to deal with it. So I'm not pushing it.

But if Troy would like to try, I'm sure I can dig up on something that would be relatively universal since not everyone likes IRC, and then there's the few that don't like the yahoo group.

"DGN Chat?" Why there isn't one - Official Response

The board was created (and continues to operate) under the idea that we want to encourage clam longer-form discussion, and well thought out ideas. Chat rooms tend not encourage that kind of discourse. All this work building the userbase , was done under this (as well as other) concepts.

Its the Marshall McLuhan "The medium is the message"at work.

The play-nice rules , make it such that DGN is associated with calm, generally flame-free discourse, open chat rooms are very difficult to properly manage in that way if not impossible.

In addition, it is well known that chat rooms, when associated with message boards, quickly consume a large number of the potential ideas/posters in favor of the more lowest-common-denominator conversation chat room "style" on both the chat room and the board(s) that are associated with them.

Every eyeball that is on a dgn "chat room" is one that isnt on the board.

You can "chat" right on DGN nearly as fast (but not quite, by desgin) as on any chat system if you really feel the need. (PMs or on board)

There are lots of other lesser reasons why there is no "DGN Chat room" but the above are the core reasons why we have not put up a chat room.

As you might be able to tell a lot of thought has gone into this one over the 5+ years of "DGN's" existence (as well as the 10 month or so existence of the various incarnations of the pre-Spiral proto-Board era)

Its a popular idea. One that we've almost implemented several times. As it stands now a DGN Chat room would be more of a liability than an asset for what we are trying to build.

If you need to "chat" everyones PM / IM information is clearly visible in their profiles.

Note the above is not "set in stone" but its, at least set in sandstone, for the time being. We've spent so much time thinking about this one its silly.

i totally get that thing where the chat rooms tend to fall into entertaining the lowest common denominator rather than having thought out responses. for that reason, if nothing else, i like the board.

OK, completely understandable why there is no official DGN chat.

Would it be ok to advertise a chatroom here on the board that DGN'ers could join if they wanted to, not an official 'DGN' room, but a chat room DGN people could particpate in if they wanted, not affiliated with the board?

Spam for other "local gothic communities" on DGN is one of the few things we have rules against.

Its not a hard and fast rule as you can see we've let several of the above posts go through, but any clear deliberate actual attempt to take members way from DGN and onto some other community would be viewed as a clear violation of the DGN rules.

I thought it was just for local forums or forums in general.

Also a club = a community and by advertising for city club you're breaking your own rules.

"local online gothic communities" is probably what you meant to say.

Rule No. 2.

No blatant spam for message boards/groups unless given special permission outside of the General promotion section.

A little goes a long way. After a while it's obvious if you are on DGN to be helpful, or just here to spam. We don't mind a little advertising in the course of a thoughtful post, or in the General Promotion section, but blatant advertising for other boards/groups (this includes "chat rooms") should be avoided.

Blatant advertising for LOCAL GOTHY COMMUNITIES is delete-warn and ban if it doesn't stop fast.

Yeah i wasn't a huge fan of that thread, but it wasn't clearly violating any "direct" rules. Also the guy posting it is obviously not just some guy that showed up to spam so it was tolerable.
