My ex-long-time-girlfriend is in an MFA program in New York, so if you have other questions, I may be able to find the answers. ....or maybe not, I make no guarantees =)

Oh, addendum: Pay attention to a few of the questions brought up at that site - which school are 'the best' for you depend on what sort of writing you're looking to do.

Thanks again. Its not for me, but this will really help a friend of mine.

THE best school is in Iowa. They practically started the creative writing college degree program. Kurt Vonnegut, Raymond Carver, and John Gardener all spent considerable time their, either as student or teacher. Of course, the really good schools are also really hard to get into, like one to three students per year at some of them.

It's all in the manuscript baby.

I've heard that. But the question arises...Who wants to live in Iowa? My flight got delayed there once and I almost threw myself on the runway out of utter frustration for the backwardsness of that state.

Ohh, Iowa isn't all bad: gorgeous outdoors stuff to do, as well as some nightlife in Boise and other areas...but yeah, it's no NYC.

Boise...isn't that in Idaho???

The City of Des Moines is one of my best accounts...unfortunately i have to travel there on occasion...Iowa is the worst state that I've ever been to.

OK, so now I'm thrust into the awkward position of defending that backward place from which I just emerged.

The school of which you speak is the University of Iowa. The program is called the Writer's Workshop and if s/he can get in, immediately hop a plane and go.

It's a phenomenal program.

Their legendary director stepped down, but an amazing and sucessful younger woman has taken his place.

Yes, it's IOWA =( more specifically, Iowa City. I should know.

I spent an eternity there.

It's by far the coolest place in Iowa. Very liberal. Very easy-going. High concentration of LGBTs (although only one crappy gay bar-a far superior club closed years ago.)

It's your typical college town. Head shops. Hippies. A zillion bars.

People are a lot friendlier there though than many of the college towns Ive been in.

Not as cool as Madison(as far as college towns go), but what is?

Since it's a little boring and there are no good clubs to go to, it leaves him/her more time to really focus on writing.

The writer's area (called the gaslight district) is located on a river and if you try hard enough, you can hear the creative souls calling out with inspiration.

Honestly, it's not that bad a place to live.

Good theater. Independent films. Good bands usually comes through.

I saw Nirvana on their Bleach tour and Smashing Pumpkins on their Gish tour (I was into grunge at the time) the Jesus Lizard, and the Dead Milkmen and countless others at this dive called Gabe's.

Oh yeah, and a competing bar had KMFDM, My Life With the Thrill Kill Kult and a bunch of other groups I cant remember.

Good restaurants there too. especially Indian and Italian.

And, of course pot. LOTS of pot.

So, dont write it off too quickly. It's interesting enough for a few years, but just not a lifetime.

Oh, and one more thing. Des Moines fucking blows. I have family there. I dont know how such a big city can have such little to do.

In fact, if I had to live anywhere in the state BUT Iowa City, I'd probably hang myself.

But IC's really not bad.
