Homicidalheathen Posted October 13, 2005 Posted October 13, 2005 :confused Hey anybody know what its like down there. My kid wants to go and I am worried about sending her to Detroit alone in the dark. On that campus especially. God these two are going to cost me a fortune within the next few years help me I am sinking. :doh
Fierce Critter Posted October 13, 2005 Posted October 13, 2005 My oldest sister went to Wayne State from 1968 through 1972 or so, commuting on buses the entire time. My other sister went from around 1976 through 1980, and lived off campus on the Cass Corridor (2nd and Prentis). My youngest sister went from 1980 through 1985 and commuted on buses the entire time. I went from 1986 through 1987 full time, commuting on buses. I did another 2 years non-consecutively driving down there after work for night classes. None of us ever had any problems. I saw some stuff out the bus windows that was shocking, but nothing that affected me directly. I dealt with a lot of vagrants hitting me up for food I could barely afford myself in the student union. That was the worst of it. I highly recommend the school. But our experiences were, on the whole, positive.
bean Posted October 13, 2005 Posted October 13, 2005 My best friend went to Wayne, and I went to class with her a few times (shut up, she had some cool classes, and I was skipping my boring classes =) ). She had a few evening classes, and never had a problem when she was there. It is one of or is the safest campus in Michigan. They will be okay. I'm sure they have common sense to be cautious of their surrounds, because it still is Detroit afterall. I'm actually planning on going there for my Master's degree within the next year, hopefully.
paradox Posted October 13, 2005 Posted October 13, 2005 i go to wayne. ive never had problems there. they send out monthly emails with crime stats. next time i get one, ill let ya have a look. the wayne state police are alot better than teh detroit police. and they have alot less ground to cover. common sense is still required, of course, but id say its as safe as any other public place in the tri-county area.
Homicidalheathen Posted October 13, 2005 Author Posted October 13, 2005 Thanks peeps I do feel allot better now I guess I will let her go as they have a better medical program. She will be happy to hear it. I just worry she is so tiny and weak.......and not at all street smart.
SomeDanGuy Posted October 13, 2005 Posted October 13, 2005 I go to Wayne. They have their own police unit which patrols the area and responds faster than the Detroit PD. They will also escort you places at night if you don't want to walk alone. The main problem with the area in my opinion is theft: don't leave stuff unattended, even in university buildings.
paradox Posted October 13, 2005 Posted October 13, 2005 ah yes, good old larceny. :grin HH, just give her the words of advise she needs to hear before ya send her off. dont walk alone at night, be aware of surroundings, dont leave bag/personal effects unattended etc.
Medea Posted October 16, 2005 Posted October 16, 2005 Yeah, I'm on WSU campus pretty much ALL the time, and it IS the safest campus in Michigan. Theft is a worry, but that will happen anywhere. Just make sure you watch your shit. There is a bum culture on campus, but they are all harmless. Just tell them no, or better yet, ignore them. And the usual, like Dox said: Don't walk around alone at night, keep aware of your surroundings, etc.
