ALSO KIM SANDERS

Who is Schiller?

IN THE BEGINNING WAS THE PIANO…

Born in 1970 near Bremen, the 7 year old Christopher von Deylen is made a present of a piano by his grandfather. The accompanying piano lessons are unavoidable and leave their mark on his future musical career. Equally influential are the first Eps that awake his curiosity: Albums by Tangerine Dream, Kraftwerk and Jean-Michel Jarre. Electronic classics with depth and emotional power.

Coincidence and luck bring him to a musically open piano teacher who is also a fan of electronic music. Von Deylen is fascinated by the possibilities opening up to him. Late into the night he experiments with synthesizers and sequencers. At the tender age of 16 he manages to unsettle the spectators at a concert at the classic music school: His first electronic compositions are accompanied by a psychedelic slide show – pictures of the first manned landing on the moon appearing to heavenly sound sequences. As a member of the obligatory high school band (“schlechte Aussichten”/ “Bad Prospects”) he plays the synthesizer and tries his hand at sound engineering with a four-track cassette recorder.

After high school (1990) von Deylen starts a degree in Applied Cultural Studies in Lueneburg. Then in 1992 comes a pre-masters course with “Music” as a core subject. During this time he makes contact with music publisher Peter Meisel in Berlin who introduces him into the Hamburg studio scene. In the legendary sound studios of “Boogie Park” and “Chateau du Pape” he gathers experience in studio work and uses every free minute to put his ideas into practice.

APPRENTICESHIP IN HAMBURG

Finally in 1994 comes the release of the first single production under the pseudonym f.l.y.: “Feel the Rhythm”. The record flops, but this doesn’t put him off, and he continues on his musical path, undeterred. He gets involved with the most diverse productions, conscientiously developing his sound.

From dance project TANK (“Can u Feel the Bass”, top 20 single charts) through electronic sequences for DIE PRINZEN, to the hit album “Golden Boy” by SIN WITH SEBASTIAN, produced together with INGA HUMPE (nowadays the voice of “2RAUMWOHNUNG”) – he is constantly excited by the new.

This leads him to arrange the music for the MDR (mid German broadcasting company) talking book production of “Lord of the Flies”, he also produce a remixed version of the 80s ICEHOUSE classic “Hey Little Girl” and releases a cover version of the ART OF NOISE hymn “Moments in Love”.

SCHILLER IS BORN

In 1998 the time has come– SCHILLER is born. At first, still a club-oriented project with dance elements. But already in the debut album “ZEITGEIST” (1999) there was a clearly audible urge to push musical boundaries. Guest vocals from Hans Paetsch, Oliver Rohrbeck (“DIE DREI ???”- classic German children’s audio book series) and the duo Voelz / Pigulla (voices from the dubbing of the “X-Files”) establish the spoken word element in SCHILLER’s world. With this in mind, and seeking to do something unique for the approaching millennium, the year 2000 brings a break from music-making. Von Deylen undertakes a long road trip with his father. They drive from London to Peking. The impressions of this 2 month-long journey are dealt with in the album “WELTREISE” (World Trip).

Released in summer 2001, it goes straight to number 1 in the album charts and stays there for the rest of the summer – more than a month. The song “Dream of You” with PETER HEPPNER of WOLFSHEIM turns into the most successful Schiller single so far, and marks the beginning of a fruitful collaboration. As with the previous album “ZEITGEIST”, “WELTREISE” is recorded in the bedroom of von Deylen’s 2 room apartment in Hamburg. Television teams from ARTE, ZDF and RTL cram themselves incredulously into the cramped attic to report on the phenomenon that is SCHILLER. “WELTREISE” is awarded a “Golden Disc”.

ON TO NEW FRONTIERS...

Excited by the musical openness and pulsating life of the German capital, von Deylen moves to Berlin in Spring 2002.

He sets up his music studio in Friedrichshain, an in-district of Berlin –the Hamburg “sleepingroom” becomes the Berlin “livingroom”. And so the third SCHILLER album “LEBEN” comes into being. With guest artists such as PETER HEPPNER, KIM SANDERS, SARAH BRIGHTMAN or VELJANOV (front-man of gothic stars DEINE LAKAIEN) he succeeds in developing the SCHILLER sound further. This album too is awarded a “Golden Disc”. Visuals fascinate von Deylen, and so it seems only logical that he compose film music for the first time in 2003. He collaborates on parts of the soundtrack for the film “Gate to Heaven” by WIM WENDER’s student VEIT HELMER. The film with UDO KIER wins various awards at international film festivals and is a blueprint for STEVEN SPIELBERG’s airport drama “TERMINAL” starring TOM HANKS.

Following several solo appearances (amongst others on ARTE MUSIC PLANET 2NIGHT and on the “Club ship AIDA”, an invitation from German President Rau to perform at his official residence SCHLOSS BELLEVUE (2002) and a concert in the Gehry building at the Brandenburg gate in Berlin, comes SCHILLER’s first live tour in the Spring of 2004. at twelve sold out concerts von Deylen presents the album “LEBEN” and highlights from the first SCHILLER albums. From the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung to Bunte (German national tabloid magazine) the press is fascinated and event managing legend MAREK LIEBERBERG suggests a follow up to the tour. In November 2004 another 9 live dates follow.

Then in autumn 2004 comes another rare SCHILLER remix: After Sinead O’Connor and the voice of CLANNAD, MOYA BRENNAN, hardcore German rockers RAMMSTEIN come knocking at von Deylen’s door, and get a powerful emotional remix of their single “OHNE DICH”.
