Hey All,

I'm seriously thinking that I really want to learn violin. Anyone out there play? If so, give me all the advice you can think of. What brands to look for, what price range I'm looking at, used or new, stores to shop at, instructors to consider, questions to ask the sales personel when purchasing an instrument, questions to ask instructors when deciding who I want to use, tricks and tips that you only learn from years of practice ... anything else you can think of.

It'll be cheaper and better for you to rent one at first that way you won't spend bucho dollars in case you decide to not pursue it. That's just in case. So go to any music store and ask them how much they charge - I'm sure you can find a good deal on a rental.

Also - practice practice practice......the violin is a bitch of an instrument to learn.

I don't play any musical instruments myself, so I can't help there. But, believe it or not, Target carries musical instruments this time of year. Check in the electronics department there for pricing. It would be cheaper than a rental (unless you were to only rent for, say, a week or something.)

Royal music in royal oak on main st. rents them reasonably cheap, espically if it's rent to own. they have every sort of books to learn from, and a whole library of sheet music to buy. I play both the Viola and the cello, I rented the cello for a few years, and then bought my viola from them, they are great people. They also have lessons that aren't that bad in price either. Good luck, it's a beautiful thing to learn.
