so i asked a girl out recently.

this is kind of a big step for me, because i haven't ever asked a girl out. i mostly seem to follow the "car wreck" style of dating, where one second i'm just going about my normal day, then *boom!* and i usually wake up laying on the ground, dazed, confused, and bleeding from somewhere.

nice girl, met her at the Renaissance festival. cute, gothy, sweet person if ever there was one. she seemed to like the fact that i actually listened to her, and wanted to help her out.

a few alight hitches....

one slight hitch... i wait to ask her her age till AFTER i ask her out, and she turns out to be 17..... and i'm 23

now in the state i live in, that's not such a big deal, and i stand no chance of jail time... but she's 17, and that comes with all the pluses and minuses of that age.

another is that's she's Wiccan.. that is not the problem.

she is an actual Wiccan, not just a teen aged Wannabe.

I'm pretty damn closely related to Cotton Mather, is the problem, and that's gotten me in to trouble with Wiccans before, though i call a large number of them friends.

for those of you who don't know he's the guy who started all those trials... of witches.... in Salem..

just trying to think if/when i might want to tell her that.

last one would be that she's pretty close friends with another friend of mine, and if something goes wrong here i'm likely going to see a cascading loss of friends going down the social ladder.

after this one, i really am going start going to seminary school.

at least if i was a priest i could get laid.

Yeah, you should have found out her age first! That may or may not be a problem though, depending on her (and your) maturity.

she seems to be fairly together for a 17 year old... hell, she seemed to be fairly together before i knew she was 17. as for my own personal maturity............. well, lets just say it's good she's used to dating 17 year old guys. KIDDING! nah, it's all good. i'm too old fashoned to push her in to anything she really wouldnt want to do, and still have over inflated ideas of how well you should treat a lady.

i told her about the Cotton Mather thing a few minutes ago, and it came off as i hoped it would. funny/ironic.

the finding out her age thing i should have done, but i did NOT expect 17 at all. she's like 2 inches shorter than me, so i suspected at least a BIT older... maybe 18-19.

When does she turn 18? Keep a decent relationship between yourself between now and then because if anything should go awry, her parents could sic the cops on you for statuatory rape, aside from the fact that it might be consenting. Play it cool.

she turns 18 in july, and i've been in relationships a LOT longer than that without even bringing up sex.. it's hard to pull off, mind you. but if you're still a virgin at 23 and date actively, you've actually had to work pretty hard at it.

but i do know the law well enough to know that if i meet her parents, bring a witness, and they say ok, then they've concented to the relationship and i'm legally in the clear with a whitness.

still, plan on taking my time anyway. it all works out for the best in the long run.

Well good luck. And it is good to know she was mature enough to handle the cotton thing. If not well....then she would not have been mature enough for a relationship as you are not responsible for something an ancestor did.

My girls are 17 and one wanted to date a guy with major baggage recently.

I am glad he did not call her back.

NOT because he was 22.

Because at 22 he is already divorced, and a father.

Not good at making life choices I am thinking is all.

I have a 4 year limit on her dating but she has a 5 year. I sorta let her choose. She is mature enough.

normally i have a 1 year limit on dating girls younger than me... though i've never dated anyone younger than me.. and i don't know if i have a limit on dating women older than me.. though i did date a 31 year old when i was about 20.

i'm lucky in a lot of respects. i've had some pretty messed up relationships, but i think the only thing i've come out of them with is a better idea of what i might be looking for.. no kids, no Ex Wives, and no diseases.

though i have to admit, there's something rather sad about dating a girl who has no idea what Transformers are...

well that's the thing, this being the south and all... at 16 in her state she can legally marry someone without her parents concent.... also, statutory rape is off the books in that state. it's statutory sexual assault, and then it only applies to people under the age of 16, if there's more than a 4 year age difference. also because they've concented to the relationship i'm in the clear, as long as i keep playing the nice guy and wait.. and seriously, if it works and we're a good couple, what's another year of waiting?

Yeah each state has there own laws and it seems the Southern ones are more tolerant to a lower age. I lived in Tennessee for a couple of years and if I recall corectly the legal age of marriage was 16.
