Homicidalheathen Posted December 9, 2005 Posted December 9, 2005 Ok so there are all these different varieties. (I sound old here, put up with me ok?) And I figured out what my favoret is! Its called hard core Gabber. Yup that is the sound I like. Anyone want to elaborate......? Maybe there are some styles I have not heard of but I like my stuff DARK sounding.
HipsterDufus Posted December 9, 2005 Posted December 9, 2005 Forgive me if I'm wrong, but isn't dark techno basically just EBM? Examples: Assemblage 23, VNV Nation, Project Pitchfork, Icon of Coil, etc.
phee Posted December 9, 2005 Posted December 9, 2005 Forgive me if I'm wrong, but isn't dark techno basically just EBM? Examples: Assemblage 23, VNV Nation, Project Pitchfork, Icon of Coil, etc. EBM is techno with lyrics, usually a bit darker.... I believe EBM is a sub genre of Techno
HipsterDufus Posted December 9, 2005 Posted December 9, 2005 EBM is techno with lyrics, usually a bit darker.... I believe EBM is a sub genre of Techno <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Ah ha. Gotcha. I don't generally tend to listen to too much actual techno... I do like some IDM, like Amon Tobin and Kid 606
phee Posted December 9, 2005 Posted December 9, 2005 I think techno is sort of a catch all for electronic dance, kinda like "rock" vs. "metal" but that is just my mental way of looking at it....
pharoh Posted December 9, 2005 Posted December 9, 2005 Try listening to Tecno Polka (TP).....it's the best shit you can ever get
ZhukovCodeslinger Posted December 9, 2005 Posted December 9, 2005 I think techno is sort of a catch all for electronic dance, kinda like "rock" vs. "metal" but that is just my mental way of looking at it.... <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Phee is correct on this one.... (not that I have 300+ techno cds and 800+ hours of live DJ music or anything)
DarkVampire Posted December 10, 2005 Posted December 10, 2005 I like techno it's good workout music. I like it hard hitting with a lot of bass, and being dark of course.
Blackmail Posted December 10, 2005 Posted December 10, 2005 carl craig, derrick may, juan atkins/model 500/cybotron, hardfloor, bochum welt, elektric music, orbital, emmanual top, underworld, joey beltran, advent, kenny larkin, undergorund resistance/mad mike banks, photek, goldie, arman van helden, paul van dyk (awesome!), paul oakenfold, ascension, derrick carter, FSOL, roni size, george acosta.... I like those.....
MarsDustDoug Posted December 11, 2005 Posted December 11, 2005 there is a style of electronic that is classified as techno. But the word techno has become what most people call the majority of electronic music. Kevin Saunderson, Stacey Pullen, alot fo Juan Atkins, Autechre, Ritchie Hawtin... those are techno dj's/producers. Personally I love Gabber as well. I threw a hardcore party Detroit back in 2001 and brought in a personnal fav, Dan Doormouse. Im also a huge Goa/psy fan. The stuff is just damn good and the more tripped out it sounds the better. I cant get enough trip-hop... but thats an old thread and wont go on about it again. I think alot of people here on the board would really dig a style of ambeint called Illbient or some dark ambient. Illbient is just that... really sick sounding ambient. The sounds used to create the music (think ambient) are just completely dissonant accompanied by some pretty dark/creepy samples. DJ Spooky coined the term but my favs would be Horchata and lolpix though they both sorta obscure the lines between illbient and dark ambient
Homicidalheathen Posted December 12, 2005 Author Posted December 12, 2005 Thanks all. I have some online listening to do!

Scary Guy Posted December 13, 2005 Posted December 13, 2005 http://www.di.fm/edmguide/edmguide.html YET AGAIN! However I don't agree with all his catagorizations.
Homicidalheathen Posted December 13, 2005 Author Posted December 13, 2005 OMG I had no idea. This will take all day and I will enjoy every second of it. Thanks Scary. I know I don't like allot of lyrics......makes it sound like disco. http://www.di.fm/edmguide/edmguide.html YET AGAIN! However I don't agree with all his catagorizations. <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

ZhukovCodeslinger Posted December 13, 2005 Posted December 13, 2005 http://www.di.fm/edmguide/edmguide.html YET AGAIN! However I don't agree with all his catagorizations. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Wow, I have a good portion of the music on that site (given as examples) if i could only get back the 300 CDs that my ex "stole".... I think I might have 75% of the music on that site. ok... spending too much time checking out all the songs :-( many of them are awesome! even if they are in a genera I dont like.... (or in a genre i love... that is getting ripped on by the site oh well) Anyway, If anyone from DGN really likes this music, I would be happy to trade with them/share some of mine. also, I do tend to find out about good concerts/shows <smile>

Fierce Critter Posted December 14, 2005 Posted December 14, 2005 I see a big difference between EBM and Techno. To me, the difference is song structure. EBM, and other non-techno dance music, has a genuine verse-chorus-verse-chorus-bridge-chorus format. Techno seems to be very repetitive. But that's just the techno I'm exposed to. I get bored by it easily.

I would say that it has to be a high percenatage like 50% or more of the sound has to be generated rather than played. ok after saying that, EBM is very very different from many of the examples of techno given in that link... yet they are all related somehow though the web.
