Shade Everdark Posted December 19, 2005 Posted December 19, 2005 Bush says history will judge his decision Someone mentioned recently that we are not living in Red China or Soviet Russia. Perhaps not, but with stories like this, it seems like we're slowly edging closer.
phee Posted December 19, 2005 Posted December 19, 2005 This country has enjoyed more free speech and freedom of thought than any other... I am starting to miss it.
Rayne Posted December 19, 2005 Posted December 19, 2005 I knew I flipped off the White House for a reason, other than Marc telling me too ...
Hellion Posted December 19, 2005 Posted December 19, 2005 :devil The Patriot Act is all about taking everything away from us including free speech and opinions. It makes me wonder why they are building so many prisons natiowide, well all I can say is Europe is looking more favorable every day.
The_Dark Posted December 19, 2005 Posted December 19, 2005 The part that no one seems to be talking about, or they only mention in fine print, is that the wire taps are not done on Americans. That they are only done on international calls to or from known Al-quida operatives in other countries. One end of the phone call is in the USA. On the other end is someone that we already know is planning to blow you and your family to hell. Another thing that is flossed over.. it's not done all the time... the numbers given in the leak were to the affect of 30 times. So... maybe ten times a year a call is intercepted and tapped without a court order. You know, sometimes, you just dont have time to wake a judge up.
The_Dark Posted December 19, 2005 Posted December 19, 2005 I wanted to add.... There is some debate going on. I for one am giving the President the benefit of the doubt. He has made specific claims about the legality of what he is doing under provisions of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act. The FISA created a secret court for monitoring the legality of all wire taps on terrorists. The president claims that FISA makes what he is doing legal and that it's heavily montitored to make sure everything is on the up and up... The only people I see claiming otherwise are the same Democrats that would say the sky is green if the President said it was blue. so... Honestly.. on this one, I dont know. My gut says it's cool and I really hope it's right. If it turns out to be wrong.. well... you people that hate Bush with so much passion that your blind to the good things he has done and achieved might just get your way.

My problem with that is the secret courts. Frankly, I don't care if those courts are secret in the interests of national security. I really don't. I do care that they are not accountable in any way, shape, or form to the American people. The decisions are entirely en camera; there is no transparency. How are we to know that it's not merely some rubber stamp court? My biggest political fear in this world is not the terrorists. It's that our government will become so reactionary to the terrorists that it starts down that slippery slope to eroding our freedoms in earnest. I don't fear any enemy this country might face, with the exceptions of China and Russia. For all our arrogance, we've enough firepower to exterminate any three other countries in the world. No, like our forefathers, I fear the potential power and tyranny of my own government.

What about the people that were doing nothing wrong and had their rights violated just because they were suspected? Don't get me wrong, I don't want another 9/11, but spying on anyone without a warrant is just too 1984 for me... This example is debatable, but it still can be cause for concern.
Homicidalheathen Posted December 20, 2005 Posted December 20, 2005 I think the government is watching me :fear Because I am uber cool. And they fear that I will change you all and bring out your coolness. Yeh. Actually I think they use 911 to impose this shit in our lives in order to stomp out drug use. It helps open the kundalini (so does meditation too guys, just takes ALLOT longer) and then your enlightened and don't need the churches. And they want you to put money into the churches.
