Well if that's your only qualification for hardcore goth, then we'd have to include Homer, Sophocles, Euripides, Aeschylus, Seneca, Shakespeare, Marlowe ... heck, you could probably even include Arthur Miller, Tennessee Williams, and Henrik Ibsen. But, they're all playwrights, not directors.

When Edward Scissorhands is one of your most celebrated works, hell yeah, you're a gothy director. In my opinion, you don't have to have vampires, demons or undead in your work to be considered Goth. It really goes back to each person's definition of Goth. "What IS Goth?"

In my opinion, it's a style of architecture, a type of music, a style of clothing, a color palette, an attitude, but most of all, a mood. Take any still frame from a Tim Burton movie and that mood is there. From Sleepy Hollow, to Lemony Snickets, from Nightmare Before Christmas to Edward Scissor hands ... everything Burton touches he paints with the palette of goth to create the mood that I think sums it all up.

By Far I agree that Tim Burton got it hands down ....but it would also be a shame to forget Ridley Scott. I don't think he's ever had more than 60 watts of light in any scene he's done.

If you need reminding go look at Gladiator, Blade Runner, Someone To Watch Over Me, Thelma & Louise, 1492, Hunger (t.v.), G,I.Jane, Hannibal, Black Hawk Down, Matchstick Men, Kingdom Of Heaven and I just think that his style is gothic.
