Slept with ghost Posted January 17, 2006 Posted January 17, 2006 has anybody ever noticed that most people that work at record stores are total assholes who think they are so great just because of where they work?
bean Posted January 17, 2006 Posted January 17, 2006 Oh I know..you just want to whip a cd at them...
Homicidalheathen Posted January 17, 2006 Posted January 17, 2006 Most of the ones I meet are clueless butt brains that only know about what they listen too themselves.
Fierce Critter Posted January 17, 2006 Posted January 17, 2006 Even worse are the ones who work at music stores that sell musical instruments. We're all supposed to walk into these stores having known how to play before we left the womb. At least that's how they treat you if you let on that you're the least bit new to any of it. I don't know how they ever sell anything, they're so freaking intimidating & snobby.
Blackmail Posted January 17, 2006 Posted January 17, 2006 I worked at Harmony House from 1993 to 1997 and then was the music section manager at barnes and Noble from 1997 to 2000. I worked there and I ruled and you people did not work there so you sucked. I would taunt every customer who came in with my stories of finding the only copy in existence of Yo La Tengo covering Mudhoney covering the Vaselines's lead singer taking a crap. And I had it on limited edition invisible vinyl. It was so rare that Yo la Tengo didn't even know they were involved in the project. Dude when someone would buy a CD by Enya or U2 or some other tool of the corporate mainstream monopoly, I would laugh in their face and tell them to get the hell out of my store. I actually just put all the top 40 CD's in the dumpster behind the store with a sign that said "if you're totally lame, this is the bin you're most likely to shop in". I knew that because I worked at harmony house that I was better than everyone else. I would often go to shows at the Gold Dollar or the Lager House or the Magic Stick and I would see awesome bands that only the band members knew existed. If there was anyone other than the bandmembers girlfriends at the show, I knew they had sold out. Once the band 'screamin dirty jackass' had 6 people at their show and I was disgusted so I took a dump right in the middle of the stage. It sounded like the Vaselines record but mine was slightly off key. Lo-Fi or die. I'm out.
pharoh Posted January 18, 2006 Posted January 18, 2006 I don't buy music anymore, I haven't been in one them places since the release of the metallica (black album) lol
Rayne Posted January 18, 2006 Posted January 18, 2006 The guys at Rock Of Ages have always been nothing but nice to me.
DarkVampire Posted January 18, 2006 Posted January 18, 2006 I don't socialize with them. I tell them to get lost if they come up to me and ask if I need help. I know what I'm looking for, go away.
bean Posted January 18, 2006 Posted January 18, 2006 I like to go in there and ask for bands that don't exist... "What do you mean you don't carry Bloated Catfish?!?!?! What kind of store is this?! NO I WILL NOT LOWER MY VOICE" <{POST_SNAPBACK}> That's fucking great..I'm going to start doing that on my days off....
MarsDustDoug Posted January 18, 2006 Posted January 18, 2006 i used to work at Harmony House as well and the only reason we ever got shitty was when it was release day for crap ass albums like Britney or nsync. (but I was one of the reasons the company made printed name plates for the "indsutrail" section. shows what enough bitching will do when things 1000 Homo DJs and Skinny Puppy are under "house music"... yeah!) Hearing "do you have the backstreet boys" thirty times on a 5 hor shift will make anyone cynical, jaded, and asshole-like. I would have MUCH rather dealt with some dude buying a generic rap album over the britney/limp bizkit/nsync people. Rayne, Rock of Ages goes through stages. They seem to get a really fekkin great crew and then a few quit and idiots work there for a bit... like a transition period. I dont go there anymore now cause the place was a freakin mess the last few times i went in. (if you go there then you must live pretty damn close to me too...)
Marblez Posted January 18, 2006 Posted January 18, 2006 "Empire Records" anyone? I don't know...they all seemed pretty damned cool to me.
Homicidalheathen Posted January 18, 2006 Posted January 18, 2006 There is a guy that works at Record Time on Gratiot. He is the god of Techno......if you don't know what you want.......or what type of electronic music to explore.....he is your man. He always turns you onto the best stuff.
Lilith Posted January 18, 2006 Posted January 18, 2006 The guys at Rock Of Ages have always been nothing but nice to me. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Umm at the risk of sounding like a creepy guy......... i will once agian say.... That's cuz you are so young n cute looking all the damn time :grin

Record time chaged a whole lot after it moved to its current location, the guys in there still seem like assholes if ya ask me.
Slept with ghost Posted January 18, 2006 Author Posted January 18, 2006 yeah i really actually started this thread over one of the jerk off's at the record time but he was just one of many

I was there this weekend. I live ... about 1/4 mile from there. I actually live in Garden City.

I love Dearborn music in canton and well... dearborn hehe. I live in dearborn heights... so yer my neighbor!
Shade Everdark Posted January 19, 2006 Posted January 19, 2006 I notice none of these places are near me...heh. And I'm too lazy to drive anywhere for music.
Rayne Posted January 19, 2006 Posted January 19, 2006 I live in dearborn heights... so yer my neighbor! <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Small world. I'm right across Inkster Rd.
Guest Megalicious Posted January 26, 2006 Posted January 26, 2006 has anybody ever noticed that most people that work at record stores are total assholes who think they are so great just because of where they work? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> uhhhh yah lol .. havent you ever seen high fidelity lol ... the underappreciated scholars LOL ...
JaneDead Posted January 26, 2006 Posted January 26, 2006 i don't go to record places often but when i do the people have always been really cool to/with me. there was a guy named dave who worked at record time before they moved and he was super friendly and always talked with me and whoever i went in with. and would suggest stuff i might like. at record time now i just pretty much look at stuff and don't talk to the people that work there but they have always been nice. there was this guy marty that worked there (not sure he does now) but he was super nice too.
soothsayer Posted January 26, 2006 Posted January 26, 2006 I worked at Rock of ages and as far as I recall I always tried to help people and be nice. I do know what you mean about some being total assholes, I've dealt with them many times. I think it's worse at places that sell instruments --- for the most part they give you the impression that if you're not part of their 'cool crowd' they don't have time for you. I say fuck 'em.
Head Wreck Posted January 26, 2006 Posted January 26, 2006 HMV... the fuss over ordering a copy of hau ruck was just insane. 4 fucking weeks of "computer says no..." (brit TV scetch show referance "little Britan"). yet people ask why i import a lot. give record shops thier due though. they are getting a hammering from internet sales. maybe its because of the hap hazard way they employ. used to go to speacialist shops and talk to staff, as they were employed as they knew thier shit. talk to the right person about the genre and your tastes and you'd 90% of the time get a good reconmendation.
Crazed Vampyress Posted February 4, 2006 Posted February 4, 2006 has anybody ever noticed that most people that work at record stores are total assholes who think they are so great just because of where they work? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Makes me think of the movie Empire Records! Warren (talking to the record store employees): You're psycho! You are psycho! What the hell is wrong with you people? You all belong in the looney bin, every one of ya! Forget you guys- I don't need you! You think you're so happy and you're so GODDAMNED great cuz you work in a freakin record store?! You think you're so SUPERIOR!
