There seems to be a common theme in your posts this last month or two... perhaps a new stratagy, I have noticed a lot of "blame throwing" in the nature of the content... I had to work at radioshack for 2 years, I had a collage degree, I was certified to teach highschool, but it didn't work, so I worked a near minimum wage job for years while looking for years... I tried construction, I did masonry, all for low pay... and finally I ended up here, making some (not quite enough), and not really doing what I love, but here I am
Hellion Posted February 1, 2006 Author Posted February 1, 2006 :devil I'm not blaming anyone that I know or any friends. I am talking about the system and these companies that call me and interview me then don't want to hire me because of my age. Any more calls that I get, I am going to ask is there any age limit? Because I do not know how anyone can retire at 35 in this nation. This not an argument this just what I know when it come to trying to find a job in this nation.

Rayne Posted February 1, 2006 Posted February 1, 2006 Hmm ... my dad just got a new job. He's 60 and somewhat still disabled from an accident at his old job. Are you sure age is the issue? I'm more than qualified to work in the automotive industry myself, but have a very hard time trying to find what I want because I don't have that paper from a school saying I CAN do what I do. I may end up going back to school in North Carolina ... I may not. But it's almost like I have to somehow prove myself to these people. I'm sure it doesn't help that I am a girl in a industry dominated by guys ... I know in time it will all work out. I am more than qualified and someone, somewhere will notice. ... But that's my issue, and I know it.
phee Posted February 1, 2006 Posted February 1, 2006 Not saying that there are not forces at work that are beyond your control, but the energy can be spent in other ways
GreggZero Posted February 1, 2006 Posted February 1, 2006 What kinds of jobs are you looking for? Are you qualified for them? I think they're hiring in IRAQ..that was a joke
Draco1958 Posted February 1, 2006 Posted February 1, 2006 Personally I am applying for anything that I am comfortable doing. No luck. Took 3 yrs to get my last job that lasted 6 months. Problem is that unskilled workers aren't in demand, the market is flooded with them. And most places would rather hire a younger worker at $5.25 an hour than an older person, except for retirees. I am 48 and in the job market. It's not just corporations doing it. A lot of employers are doing it. I am either under qualified for my age or over qualified for the position. Some say they can't pay me what I am worth so they can't or won't hire me. Yes, I have been told that to my face. Right now $5.25 an hour is better than no job. Can always look for something better while working. Employers will pick up an attitude like I am too good for this low pay and won't hire you...period. They are trained to look for that. Accept what you can find and look for something better. A lot of employers will hire someone already working instead of someone unemployed. It's strange but true. And believe me Crank, I really can empathize with you situation and income needs.

The only trouble is, 0.00 pays even less
The_Dark Posted February 1, 2006 Posted February 1, 2006 Has anyone actually told you that it was because of your age? In those words? You can sue for that. Maybe you should take the low paying job... and if it doesn;t meet your budget... change your budget. If that doesn;t work.. get second job.
Steven Posted February 1, 2006 Posted February 1, 2006 I dont really understand the age discrimination thing Crank, because your young, its difficult for me to understand how this applies to you at age 35. Is there truly no sense of personal responsibility on your part? I'm not knocking you - I'm asking an honest question.

A good friend of mine was told quite a few times that alot of places he applied at would not hire him because he was too old, like 31 is too old, not! Other than that alot of applications do not state age on the part that says "we do not discriminate against race color etc, ect, ect. Alot of these corrupt companies will make up an excuse or some other bs to avoid hiring you. I am basically waiting for the right time to where I might have a good reason to get a lawsuit going as long as I have proof, because by law this kind of practice is illeagal. just wanted to let ya know friend.I also hate when they say there are immediate openings and there really are not.Sounds like a bait and switch.
honeymustard02 Posted February 2, 2006 Posted February 2, 2006 Gee one could never think that maybe you aren't right for the job. You're attitude comes off as bad. Maybe you are too young and they view that as unstable. Now that I've thought about it.......I think I remember seeing signs posted around the state of michigan saying "DON'T GIVE CRANK WORK!!!!! HE'S NOT 40 YET!!!!" Go work at McD's at least you get a free lunch.
Hellion Posted February 2, 2006 Author Posted February 2, 2006 :devil Well at least when I work for my brothers business I get paid around 15 to 25dollars a hour cash compared to what some people I know make!
honeymustard02 Posted February 2, 2006 Posted February 2, 2006 But you drive a pos that you talk about blowing up?
honeymustard02 Posted February 2, 2006 Posted February 2, 2006 Hey I haven't called names I'm just making a statement. All of his posts lately have been on how no one wants to hire him. Like all these jobs are getting together and working against him. You get what you give in this world. You think negative about getting a job then you won't get one.
Head Wreck Posted February 2, 2006 Posted February 2, 2006 only discrimination i have ever seen when getting hired was personal appearance. it was a good thing i had a royal invite to do with the volontry work i did or i would probably still be between job to job as i would not have cut my hair (you look silly in No. 1 dress uniform, peacked cap and blonde hair and warrior braids down to halfway down your back) i started this job with short hair and allowed people to get used to me before the hair growth. trick with all jobs is face that fits. whatever that face maybee thats the face you need to replicate
Fierce Critter Posted February 4, 2006 Posted February 4, 2006 I'm not sure the types of jobs Crank is applying for are places that are particular about hair length. That's if my assumption that he's looking for welding work at blue-collar shops is correct. Jon has worked mainly jobs like that. Hair length was never an issue until he took this job - and he cut his hair before he even saw the job description. It was, simply, time. I miss his hair. And I do not like the fact that he is in a position now where short hair/appearance are crucial to his success. But I do NOT mind the income he's making or the benefits that come with it. I used to be a pretty staid hardliner on "DON'T GIVE IN TO THE MAN!" In some ways, I still am. But I'd rather have Jon with short hair working a job that gives him respect & financial comfort than Jon with long hair working crap factory jobs where his physical health could be at risk & no hope of advancement.

Not likeing GWB will go against you, but I know one thing.(not to sound disrespectful) I am not stupid, and I know you all know that.
Onyx Posted February 4, 2006 Posted February 4, 2006 Crank, it may just be a numbers game anymore. Jobs are more difficult to find than ever. Maybe after you take a break for a bit you can go back at it. I put out over 100 resumes when I was first looking for a job in my field (but I was looking over the whole eastern US at the time and willing to move. That many applications allowed me to choose and I didn't have to take the first thing that came along. It's discouraging but if you keep trying I bet you'll come across something you like that pays decent.
