Disliking Your Own Race

There are people of my own race whom I dislike, and there are people of other races whom I dislike. It has nothing to do with the color of their skin. It's all about what they do and how they present themselves.

If a man who is nicely dressed walks by me and says "Good day", then another man who is dressed like a thug walks by and says "Yo, bitch", I am going to be annoyed by, or afraid of, the second guy, regardless of what race either of them is.

I believe that everyone is predjudiced(not racist, predjudiced) to some extent. That's not a bad thing in itself, it's human nature. We all have ideas about people who are different from us, which come from both our upbringing and our experiences. Some of those ideas are completely unfounded, while others are simply observations of differences between cultures.

Years ago I dated someone of a different race than I am. It was by no means a negative experience, but I probably wouldn't do it again, simply because I realized that our upbringing and views were different and therefore we couldn't see eye to eye. I don't see anything wrong with interracial dating, but for a relationship to work you have to understand where the other person is coming from. For other people, though, I think interracial relationships can work just fine.

It does shock me sometimes, though, to see how segregated the Detroit area is compared to other places I've been/lived.
