AOL (Yahoo) to charge $ for "commercial" email.

I'm not on AOL so it doesn't directly affect me. And I do have a Yahoo account but it's mostly for signing up at places I'm pretty sure are going to wind up spamming me anyways...

Anyways.. As has been pointed out in various articles, there are a lot of mailing lists and non-profits, potentially critical stuff, that can't afford to pay. AOL says they'll still get through... but will they really? Once AOL get's a taste of the revenues... who's to say they won't start making this mandatory, or charging any outside user? From there, other providers might feel obliged to do the same. On the other hand, I read that congress is discussing the issue of net nuetrality: ie No tiered services. (Verizon was looking at charging high-bandwidth users more... or something to that effect.)

Yes.. I'm aware there are tiered services... but that's for the owners of the sites, not individual net users.

Thoughts?

Oh. If you'd like to try to persuade AOL to cancel this policy, sign this petition.
