Issues with my daughter

My daughter, Samantha, came to me today and told me crying saying she needs a counslor. She told me that she's been very depressed lately.. feeling sad, mad and doing harm to herself like cutting. She showed me her arms, where I seen scares.

My jaw hit the floor when I heard this. I would have never of thought in a million years she was feeling this way. It made me quite upset and naturally I started crying with her while holding her. =(

I talked to her a few hours and reassured her that I will find some help for her, for us.

The thing is, I don't know where to start. I know for sure I'm going to go with a Psychciatrist and not a counslor but how do I find one? Should I take her to her pediatrician and discuss this with him or find someone in the phone book? Does anyone here know of one that you use or have used for your child?

Wow! I'm sorry to hear that. I only had one person who got through to me Dr. Wiley Raspberry, he's got an office in Detroit. I could see if I can find the number. If anyone can get through to a person he can, cause lord knows I've got trust issues.

I hope you find someone she can work well with. If the first one doesn't work out don't hesitate to try another. Not all counselors are good - I've had really good ones in the past and really bad ones.

Thats really really wonderful that she felt she could come to you and ask for help like that.

((((hugs))))

That is really really good that she came to you for help. She's very lucky she can have a mother she can go to for help. Go to your pediatrician and ask them for a referral, and as Onyx said, if the first one sucks, find another one. It's good that she gets help now while she's still young, so the problems don't get worse. It's harder to get help when you are older and have been doing those things/feeling that way for years. Trust me, I know. I wish her well.

Go to her doctor and get a list and go through it till SHE finds one she feels she can talk to and open up to.

Well, it's awesome she opened up to you like that. I had a relationship with my mom like that when I was young too and it helped me so much that she understood and was there for me. Take comfort in that.

Your insurance will probably require that you go through your primary care physician to get a psychiatrist, so I would go that route. be wairy of them putting her on a ton of drugs though. Sometimes that stuff does more harm than good.

Good luck and hang in there. *Hug*

May even want to consider talking to experienced school counselors in the area when you do get some names. They should be able to help steer you in the direction of someone who they have seen offer results.

Thanks everyone. I called her school counslor and also her pediatrcian today and they are going to be helping us out.

Even though this was a while back but I still remember the day when I was over your house and I met your daughter. Her being the silent type I got the vibe that she turn out to be a cutter cuz knowing the silent types like me in the past (not saying ALL silent types are cutters).

When I use to have problems with self-cutting my mom setted a appointment with a counselor (or maybe therapist, yeah I know, bad memory) downtown monroe at the hospital, his name was marty (cant remember his full name) and he turned out to be way lot kewler than the other counselors i've dealt with in the past and actually helped me out alot. So if your in the monroe area looking you defintely want to check out the monroe hospital and ask if marty's still available.

Warning- Since monroe does suck you defintely want ta be careful who ya dealing with though.
