If you slam your fingernail or toenail in a door or something like that, it turns a nasty black color as it dies, before it falls off.... My father had his thumb slammed in a machine at work and it was totally disgusting!

My daughter got her finger slammed in a locker a school last year. I took her to the doctor's cuz I thought it might be broke but it wasn't. The doc ended up burning 2 or 3 holes into the nail bed to let pressure out and blood. It was nasty.

Her nail did end up falling off like a month later.
