honeymustard02 Posted March 20, 2006 Posted March 20, 2006 Ok I just got ripped off but I saved my own butt at the same time. Ok blonde moment is the kick off. I get a call saying something about a magazine subscription. This doesn't bother me because I did sign up for this. I figured they were calling to verify. Well I talk to the chick and then get her "superviser". P.S For the first few times the chick called me Jennifer, My name is JESSICA! What set me off with this is he asked for my card number. I felt uneasy. Which right there should have stopped me but again blonde moment. Well THEN he wants my SSN#. That was a huge red flag and I said no. Anyway I get off the phone and I'm like oh shit I just got ripped off. SO!!! I get on the phone a min later with Capital one and cancel my card in like 5mins. SO THat is the saving my own butt part. I feel retarded for this because I know better. ANYWAY!! If you get a call about being entered in a sweepstakes or winning anything by a company called TRAVEL VALUE PLUS, DO NOT DO IT. I found them on Rip Off Reports.com and they are horrible. So please don't do what I did!!!!!!
Brenda Starrr Posted March 20, 2006 Posted March 20, 2006 Wow. Good thing that you caught that. So many people don't!
honeymustard02 Posted March 20, 2006 Author Posted March 20, 2006 I feel really dumb but good that I at least caught it. They were smooth talkers which kind of helped me deny that they were trying to screw me over. I just hope no one else gets this. And if they do, you'll know.
Brenda Starrr Posted March 20, 2006 Posted March 20, 2006 Sometimes we just get caught off-guard. You were only caught slightly off-guard!
Msterbeau Posted March 20, 2006 Posted March 20, 2006 My answer to this is to never talk with anyone. Ever.
torn asunder Posted March 20, 2006 Posted March 20, 2006 My answer to this is to never talk with anyone. Ever. doood, where did you get that avatar!! that rocks! i want one!! :woot: "vee-dub in da house, representin deustchland, yo!!" :laughing :laughing
FarrIL Posted March 20, 2006 Posted March 20, 2006 We had these people call the house once before where they were telling Wendy and George that there was a company that had all this money and that they had been selected to receive a large chunk of it. At first they said they'd be getting about 2000 dollars. Then a few minutes later when my stepdad repeated that number, they said "No no, 12,000 dollars" and they kindly hung up after a few minutes of trying to tell these people off. They called twice in an hour..... it was pissing us off. =_=;;
n0Mad Posted March 20, 2006 Posted March 20, 2006 A good strategy is to say, "I'm in the middle of another call right now. Can you call back in 15 minutes?" And then you call the police, tell them that you think you're getting scammed and see if they can set up a tracer on your line and give you a flagged credit card number to give them. When the scammers call back, you play along and give them the number the cops gave you. The cops will have traced and recorded the convo, and if the scammers try to use the flagged #, the fraud department will immediately be notified.
honeymustard02 Posted March 21, 2006 Author Posted March 21, 2006 Honestly I wasn't thinking. Bells went off in my head because he kept pushing me to get my card out for the number. But Capital One was REALLY nice about freezing my account and starting a new one. It took all of 3mins to do. The woman who did it sent in a fraud report about it. So I don't know if it'll go anywhere. I think they'll try and get something if the people try and charge it.
Lilith Posted March 22, 2006 Posted March 22, 2006 i did something similar with pay pal through email, I got an email saying they wanted to confirm my purchase of a watch for $378, so i clicked the cancel button they asked for all my info and before i could think that i might be getting ripped off here and why was pay pal sending me this note i had hit send. I too realized almost immediately after and called to change all my info. I felt Dumb too, but the fact I thought to save my own but before I got any real charges on my card made me feel better. For as well it was one of those moments I was not thinking, other tings on my mind etc….. I think we all have had moments like this at one point or another.
