Schools Ban Patriotic Clothes, Flags

That is retarded.... so kids are using patriotic images to taunt other kids... it seems to me that the problem is no the patriotic image, but kids needing to be discilplined for mistreating other students.... if it wasn't the flag, it would be some other symbol they would use to bully others

Retarted and Un-Constitutional.

I heard about this on a Canadian talk radio show this morning. The host and the callers were outraged. They all seemed to recognize the USA as the most outwardly patriotic country and were apalled to see this happen.

The school is where patriotism was enforced for me as a kid. I actually remember saying the pledge of allegiance and singing a patriotic song with my classes at the beginning of the school day. If we take even the flag out of the schools...where do they get it?

Obviously people immigrants and citizens alike seem to want to be here. What is wrong with showing your American pride whether you are here legally or not??

Conflict resolution? How are we teaching kids about conflict resolution here? There were about 20 kids involved in the issue that brought this restriction on. Instead of showing these unbelievably sensitive, impressionable TEENAGE kids how to resolve their issues through peaceful democratic, logical means - the school tells them that they are not worth educating. They are not trusted to make appropriate decisions. To do this, they restrict their words and their clothing. They redirect their attention to other topics to restrict their thoughts and nullify any ability to express themselves on this issue. This way it will effectively become a non-issue, right?

The issue is stupid, all the way around. Smack them down for misbehaving, not for flaunting some silly flag or piece of clothing.

I'm probably just being exceptionally cranky today, because I'm working on getting over being ill, but sentiments like this one:

Keith Brentlinger displays the U.S. flag outside Hatter, Williams and Purdy, his Oceanside business.

"To me, it's everything," said Brentlinger "I mean, like I said -- we truly live in the greatest country in the world."

are really starting to push my annoyance buttons. The sooner we realize we are part of the world, and not separate or above, the better off we'll all be.

I've been to Europe and after coming back I too, agree that we live in the greatest country in the world. We have different laws, different customs and different economic philosophies. Patriotism is great as long as it doesn't evolve into jingoism.

By the way, this is getting off topic, but I am not a globalist and I am turning into an isolationist, even if it isn't practical. I do feel bad for the 3rd world countries but I don't want jobs shipped over there if it means Americans lose theirs.

We do realize we are part of the world, but we are seperate. We have our own identity. We have our own culture. Just like everyone else does. There is never going to be one world culture. Atleast, not without someone forcing thier culture down everyone elses throat.

Oh my.

Phee, TheDark and TornAsunder all agreeing in the same thread.

The world is coming to an end!

... and back on topic - I agree with Phee that the kids need to be disciplined rather than banning "patriotic" clothing. The behavior is not really being dealt with and it's going to surface in another way. Those same kids will find some other way to cause trouble.

Oh you mean like the cross?

Lets look at it this way, this is America and it is OUR country (I'm including the immagrents too in "our"). They can either learn to love it (and hate the government) as we do or GTFO and GTFH.

I remember when the suspended a kid for not standing durring the pledge of aligence (then again I wouldn't stand for it either anymore).

Maybe I'm just crazy, but I've always thought most clothing depicting the American flag was rather disrespectful. If you are deeply patriotic shouldn't you display the American flag as a flag, intact, rather than cut it up, or glue sequins on it or whatever, and make a T-shirt out of it?

I remember shortly after 9-11-01 seeing boxer shorts with the American flag on them. What's patriotic about wearing the American flag on your ass and sitting on it?

If, like myself, you are not deeply patriotic, leave the flag alone all together and quit being a hypocrite. I always find it amusing seeing someone wearing something with the flag for purpose of fashion, all the while bitching about how much the country sucks.

Dumb... Although they said it was temporary.
