I never, ever stop at rest areas. Creepy and seem dangerous.

I always stop at a fast-food place if I need to use the bathroom or rest my eyes a bit. Well lighted and bathrooms usually clean.

Truckers tend to sleep overnight at those. In some cases, when travelling without much of a plan- good places to get pamphlets for ideas. Also, they almost always have maps for you to look at in case you're lost. During the homeless days- where I slept in my car.

Damn straight Bren ... I drove for almost two days straight to get to Detroit .. a girl has got to pee somewhere. If I pulled over and found a fast food place everytime I had to pee Id get nowhere lol ..

Not to mention when your in the middle of no where on a toll road in OK at four in the moring .... IF I HAVE TO GO IM GOING!

Actually, rest areas and lots of outside type public restrooms have been used for gay men to get together.

In Wayne county years back several men were busted for soliciting sex from undercover police officers in the rest area on I275 north between Michigan Avenue and Ford . A couple of those men were teachers and school administrators in western Wayne county.

George Michael who got busted for soliciting sex from an undercover officer was ina a public restroom at the time. It happens.

BUT I have never heard of anybody being raped or killed in one. I HAVE heard about people being raped and killed in mall and fast food reastraunt bathrooms though.

So where ARE you safe?
