Well, it was a lot better than the tame, "safe" lampooning in the form of Bush impersonation, done by Steve Bridges. I personally don't think the White House can bitch much, seeing that they asked Colbert to come and be the primary entertainment; if they were expecting that he'd bow down to Bush or "play nice," then they obviously didn't do their research. I thought his performance was really well-spun and incredibly clever.

Yes it was a Presidential press dinner and Bush and his people knew exactly how this would go. I believe it was done purposely to strike at the press. It was funny, fitting to the crowd. Yes not everyone found it funny but alot of what he said was true about the press. Over all I applaud Bush for having the balls to do that, make fun of the press since they have fun making fun of him. And believe it or not, his routine was cleared thru the President's people first. They don't like surprises.

I don't really think Bush deserves credit; he sat there and pretended to be amused; he pretty much does that all the time anyway.

Actually... I think people are mixing up the TWO impersonators. President Bush and an Impersonator did the opening speach together. What I saw of it was funny as hell. The Impersonator pronounced everything correctly and Bush mis-promounced things on purpose.

When Colbert came on stage, Bush smiled for about 5min and then sat there stone faced. Afterward he did shake his hand and tell him that he did a good job.. but he didn;t look too happy during.

Yeah, Bush looked really pissed. It was amusing to see his face as he was shaking Colbert's hand, smiling, and then the change of expression as soon as Colbert looked the other way. It was the classic "happy/pissed" moment.

I'm not saying Bushed liked everything Colbert said. I'm just saying that 1. He knew the routine ahead of time. It had to be cleared. 2. As far as Bush having balls, I was referring to allowing Colbert to be invited and do a routine. Again, Bush had to approve the invite for security reasons, not that Colbert is a security risk, it's just SOP for something like that.
