newbie musician question

torn asunder

got a good deal on a mic, stand, and cable the other day, but when i got it home, i realized i had nothing to plug the cable into. (wrong conenctors - my mixer board & amp only have headphone-style jacks, and the mic cable has a three-prong connector) i know it's probably a silly question, but do they make adapters for these, or do i need to buy some kind of monitor, etc., to be able to use it!?

thanks, and please, be kind to a noob! :innocent

Yes... XLR to Quarter Inch... You can get them at Radioshack...

What kind of mixer?

reaaaaly cheap - i'm not sure, but i'll look it up when i get home & post it - it's just a little 4 channel, and i don't know the first thing about using it, but that's why i got the mic & such... :wink

any suggestions/help/advice is welcome!! :grin

It sounds like you have a "DJ Mixer" is this correct?

What kind of music are you doing?

actually, i'm not doing anything yet - i got the mixer with an old home stereo i bought, and it's been sitting. if i use it, it'll most likely be for live music, since i have no way presently to record anything, tho i wish i did...

and from what i remember, it's probqably some cheap radio shack mixer, or something like it - not high-dollar in any way.

Torn - I have one of those 1/4" to XLR adapters sitting in front of me right now. Picked it up from Radio Shack a few weeks ago for $13.99 or so.

They probably have one that is XLR to 1/4".

Welcome to the world of home recording! =)

You'll also need to check out if your mic needs power to operate. Not all mixers have "Phantom power" options on them. If that's the case you'll need a Mic preamp, which I would suggest anyway no matter what. What kind of mic is it?
