Hey I love a good videogame, Halo, NBA 2k6, World Soccer Winning Eleven 9, Resident Evil and a slew of others.

But this RPG thing, I think it's for geeks. I know some of you love the game WOW. I know 2 people (one DGNer and one non DGNer) who play the game about 8 hours a day or more.

I just think it's pretty damn geeky.

So, gamers, here's your chance to tell me why I am wrong.

I think they're geeky.

And I freely admit I would probably be a geek too if I didn't know for a fact I'd become addicted and cease everything else from bathing to cooking dinner to doing laundry.

When I first went online, one of my favorite things to do was chatroom RPG's where you created a character for yourself and described your actions.

Yeah, I could easily be a geek.

One guy in South Korea died of seizures related to playing an RPG for too long. I think he played for 30 straight hours and collapsed of exhaustion. I'll look for the link.

Who said an RPG had to be online lol :laughing

I don't really care for them, but my better half does to some degree. Not online of course, but boardgame wise. I think its cute, all the dorks come over, and eat their pizza and drink their beer. Its funny to listen to them =) I embrace their dork-ness =) Some of the games even look fun, however I dont know how one could spend 8 hours a day BM. I by no means think they are "great" But hey if it makes my sweetie happy I'm all for it :happy:

Final Fantasy I forevah!

KOTOR was sweet.

Diable I & II, though more action-y than RPG-y, were quite the time sucks as well.

MMORPGs.... yeah, I've avoided those. I just like the idea that a game can end. It's like a safety valve in case I get addicted.

I remember that.

I've gone through phases where I've been sucked into one game or another, but not for the last couple of years and never to the extreme.

The guys that I work with play WOW like there is no tomorrow. They talk about it every single day!! I havent played it myself, but like Jarodaka, I get easily addicted to those kinda games. I'll just stick to FF and Shadow Hearts for now. . .

I am gonna "out" someone from DGN here.

Nienna plays WoW.

Now the cat's out of the bag.

From what I can tell, she lives a normal life.

My girlfriend's brother plays it nonstop. When he needs to get ahold of one of his friends he doesn't call them on the phone, he logs into WoW and messages them.

I'm getting pretty tired of WoW. Mostly the lack of game content/storyline. Just not as in depth as Everquest or Everquest 2. I don't know if anyone has played EQ2 but it's pretty damn deep as far as the story line, things to do, classes, races, items, spells, abilities, pvp, everything is just better.

WoW I think was just kind of thrown together as quickly as possible. Not to mention the fact that Blizzard is totally new to the MMORPG scene and they've just got it all wrong as far as their entire operation goes. Servers suck, customer service sucks, the weekly maintenance is a PITA.

Mythic Entertainment launched Dark Age of Camelot, they bought good hardware and have a good team of techs to run their servers. They were brand new to the whole scene just like Blizzard but with less money, and they got it right.. They manage to run their game with almost no down time AND they even manage to put out an expansion pack every year since it launched pretty close to the anniversary. Blizzard still doesn't know when their WoW expansion will hit shelves.

I dunno but playing WoW anymore feels like playing half a game. Not worth the money they charge me, I'm going back to EQ2 after this month's subscription to WoW expires. Speaking of which if anyone has a character on Black Dragonflight and needs like 100 gold, maybe some equip.. Hit me up some time in about 3 weeks I might just give all my shit away.

RPG takes a lot more brain function that action games.

I enjoy FPS on PC more than most other genres.

FPS don't count on consoles unless they add mouse and keyboard

Novice!

Back when I had first gotten my GameCube, the only game I owned was The Legend of Zelda: The Windwaker. I played it until I beat it, 3 1/2 days straight. With one exception - my roommate physically forced me to take a nap for a few hours after the first couple of days. If I got hungry, I just reached into the mini-fridge that was sitting next to me.

True story, I kid you not.

RPG's are awesome!!!

I only played WoW for about 3- 4 months, I got bored of it for some reason. I used to play on SWG before the developers screwed the game, did that for about a year. Did the EVE thing about 2 months, got bored of this one fast. At the moment I'm not playing any MMO's or RPG's.

How can you not like RPG's like Baldur's Gate, BGII, Icewind Dale, Planescape:Torment and Neverwinter Nights ( NWN II is on the horizon )?

I'm not even going to share my mmorpg addiction. It's too embarassing. I used to want help. I thought I could be better. I quit for several months.

One of the major draws of online gaming, from an addiction level, is the ability to escape from the world in which you actually live. When I was horribly addicted to games, particularly online ones, it was because I didn't have anything else I'd rather do, and could do - I had things I'd prefer to do, but no chance to do them.

An offshoot of that is this new world you enter while playing is full of people. This is a very large community that can be reached almost instantaneously regardless of where they are. It's like the biggest convention ever created, except it's perpetual - people are *always* there. You make friends in this community (otherwise you'd play offline, lol), and have enemies, competitors, etc.

For anybody who has trouble making friends, who is bullied or made fun of in school, who feels inferior or inadequate...this other community is a godsend. No matter what you look like IRL, how clumsy or stupid you are, how bad your grades are, whatever...all that matters in the game is how often you play, when you play, who you play with, how you act towards them, and - most importantly -how well you play.

If you're a good gamer who's willing to put in the time and can associate well with people online, your online group is practically guaranteed to be larger, more accepting, and think better of you than your IRL group. This, above all else, is what kept me playing. People liked me online, they thought I was awesome or at least skilled...I could hold my own, and I had several people I played with frequently, and we worked together and had fun. It's like going out with a bunch of friends of the same sex - you know each other, you're out to have fun, and no matter what happens you're going to enjoy it because you're with them.

Online gaming can provide a person with feelings of greater power, more control, more progress for their effort, a stronger sense of competition, and a more accepting community...things happen in an MMORPG far more quickly than IRL, and unless you're playing Ultima Online, these things are almost always positive.

Edit: IIRC, WoW now is the dominant MMORPG, and may have over half the market. WoW is an awesome game because the game itself (maybe not the servers, but certainly the game) is immensely polished and balanced, and has only got more so with the patches. And it moves a lot faster than any other MMO out there, allowing casual gamers to level towards max a lot faster than elsewhere. There's not much waiting around with WoW, so it's more accessible, and thus more fun to the casual gamer, and that was Blizzard's goal

      About to head up to Roseville to return this rental and pick up my truck from the auto shop.  It is supposedly sporting a newly fabricated frame rail...I don't think they are referred to as "chassis" anymore as I see the confusion in shop owner's eyes when they ask me if I'm looking for "body work?".   But I do find it interesting that I told the owner that I worked direct with OEM parts and yet he still wrote me up an invoice with overpriced OEM parts from companies I used to host at the place I used to work for.  With that said, I'm expecting a stellar job for the amount I paid.   ...else, there will be some talk negotiations.

      ~~~~~ Definitely wishing you luck.  Do enjoy yourselves.   But I have to admit, the first thing that came to mind was does roadside assistance reach the desert? 😬
      ~~~~~ Yeah, it's like something happened to my metabolism this past Winter and when I came out of hibernation, that AARP Join Request started looking like something to check into.

      This 👆 definitely goes with what I said in my other post - getting old sucks. Seems like *everything* takes longer and takes more energy out of me than it used to. Really need to work on my diet and exercise, I've found the older I get, the more important those things have really become...
