I was really into soundgarden (I am 29 BTW) janes addiction, mudhoney for a while... but I am slightly older then Miss Kelly

I listen to Nirvana - I also respect K.C.'s song writing ability. As for his guitar playing, you don't need to be a great player to write great songs otherwise, most bands would suck because lets face it, not many guitarists out there actually play great guitar.

Are they overrated? Maybe but maybe not. That is I think a matter of personal opinion - example, Elvis wasn't (imo) a great singer but millions of people like him. I think it's all a matter of perspective.

I think Elvis is more overrated then Nirvana.... heh

I think they were a genuinely good band, but their image got clouded by people who tended to get a little too rabid/fanatical/annoying over them. That probably was MTV and mainstream radio's fault, sure, but Nirvana were still a good band.

I agree... they are officially in Phee's hall of "not bad" along with Pearl Jam, KMFDM, Megadeth, Oghr, Neurotic Fish....

Nirvana was great. Their songs were violent, depressing, suicidal and heart breaking. I shed a tear when Kurt died, it was a tragic end to a troubled soul.

But how was that any different from the other bands that were our around the time?

Posted

Other bands that I listened to at that time were not like that; violent, depressing, suicidal and heart breaking. Which fit my mood at the time.

Plus they or Kurt did not want to be "popular" of have all that fame like so many other bands wish to have. Kurt prefered to keep it simple and stay at a low key. All of that attention was one of many reasons that put him over the edge.

Hmmm.... I would have to disagree with you their.... (obviously not about the bands that you listened to :cheerful ) But he seemed to very much eat up the attention.... palying at the MTV awards, making expensive videos, and giving interviews on TV so to speak... he always struck me as the very excepting "rebel superstar"

I'm going to disagree with you there, Phee.

I believe he was a "good boy" who fulfilled the terms of his contracts, and found he couldn't find a way out of something he didn't really grasp he was getting himself into. Thus, the shotgun.

Unlike the most ridiculous "rebel superstar", that being Axl Rose, who fucks over managers, bandmates, lables, etc. with every little hissy fit he throws and refusals to do that which he signed up for.

I read a biography a long time ago about him which is where I got the he didn't like the fame and attention bit.

OMG I like Kurt a lot more then Axel.... but still Kurt killed himself... and especially when you have a child I consider the most selfish act one can do.... I didn't have the opinion of Kurt until he killed himself... this was when almost all of my respect left for him...

That is pretty much true with a lot of people who commit suicide... as far as how my respect goes...

I also liked

Soundgarden

Candlebox

Sonic Youth

Mudhoney

GreenDay

OffSpring

Stone Temple Pilots

Radio Head

Cranberries

Porno for Pyros

And a lot of other music from that time frame that was Mainstream

I think one big factor is age

I liked most of these band, as they were my peers.  People I could "relate" to....if you call it that.....at the age when I was most impressionable...

You tend to embrace the music of your time

NOW, most of the mainstream out there is younger than myself.  I am thier peer.  It's like shut the fuck up whiney little emo kid with 80's hair.....

HA!

I totally agree... and I'd luuuuv to raid your collection one day (for whatever I may not have already).
