I wont name names, but I know someone who left their machine gun in a port-a-potty, luckily a friend found it and returned it.

True story.

An M16 isn't a machine gun? it does have full auto, or well burst mode that is.

lets see. you know handguns are banned here right?

well theres been two cases of MP's leaving thier pistols in a public place.

begens the question on why was said person carring a sidearm in a public place and out of uniform

I would like to see a complete picture of the "9mm Colt machinegun". They did not bother to show the back end, so it is possible that it is actually a pistol (with out being able to see if it has a buttstock i cant tell) and I refuse to trust the news media to accurately report anything gun related. They did not state if it was the officers weapon (then not likely to be a machine gun) or if it was a departmental weapon.

I also dont see why west bloomfield would be using 9mm Colt "M-16s" since just about every other department on the planet uses some sort of H&K MP-5

Well... *all* guns are machines, technically speaking. =)

not so.

machine gun is an emplaced weapon (IE L7 on tripod, M2, Browning 30, etc...

a rifle is whatt a soldier carries (L85, L112A1, L4, L1A1, L42, L96)

a light machine gun is a portable support weapon (L7 with butstock, M249, M60, L86)

a sub machine gun is a compact weapon that fires "pistol" calibres (MP5, Colt model 635, L2A3)

i used to get bollockings if i refered to my cadet GP rifle as a gun

on a side note of trivia. a lot of UK police forces are changing over from the MP5, to the G36C with the telescopic handrail, but no red dot. both the above tend to be be with semi only groupings installed, and the G36's with SL-8 magazines.

i gues people dont like the idea of giving armed response units to much firepower

Technically... guns are mechanical devices, not machines. I'm pretty sure "machines" have power sources.

Machine:

1. A device consisting of fixed and moving parts that modifies mechanical energy and transmits it in a more useful form.

2. A simple device, such as a lever, a pulley, or an inclined plane, that alters the magnitude or direction, or both, of an applied force; a simple machine.

3. A system or device for doing work, as an automobile or a jackhammer, together with its power source and auxiliary equipment.

4. A system or device, such as a computer, that performs or assists in the performance of a human task: The machine is down.

5. An intricate natural system or organism, such as the human body.

6. A person who acts in a rigid, mechanical, or unconscious manner.

7. An organized group of people whose members are or appear to be under the control of one or more leaders: a political machine.

8. A device used to produce a stage effect, especially a mechanical means of lowering an actor onto the stage.

9. A literary device used to produce an effect, especially the introduction of a supernatural being to resolve a plot.

It doesn't really fall into any one of these if you ask me.. I'm just feeling nitpicky though.. :-P

So what you are saying is that an MP5 sub machine gun has no rifling in it?

Most machine guns are rifles too. All it takes to make a "machine gun" is to be fully automatic, which is why I said it has burst mode which is 3 rounds of full auto, there by qualifying it as a machine gun. The M16A1 was fully automatic, is it not a machine gun? The M249 SAW fires exactly the same round as the M16, even can be magazine fed, is it to be considered a rifle and not a machine gun?

Even my MK19 fully automatic 40mm grenade launcher is considered by the millitary to be a "machine gun", or "auto cannon" just because its fully automatic.

Jeez how would you know? Are you in the army or something?

Marc,

They are infact machines. They use a Gas to power themselves. The Gas is created when the cap ignites the powder.. the waste Gases are used to power the "machine"

I will admit that the M16 isn't generally refered to as a machine gun and when you qualify with it you earn a "Rifle" badge, however occording to the dictionary definition of "machine gun" the M16 does qualify. Now the civillian version, the AR15, does not have an auto or a Burst selection therefore it does not qualify as a machine gun.

*edit* I mean the AR15 isn't "supposed to" have any full auto... :fear

I remember in Elementry School...

Simple Machines: Pully, Wedge, and Lever....

Heck SiegeMachines were a combination of all of these in the middle ages... why does that sound so familiar that word?
