I remember in Elementry School...

Simple Machines: Pully, Wedge, and Lever....

Heck SiegeMachines were a combination of all of these in the middle ages... why does that sound so familiar that word?

I have no idea what you are talking about.

Marc,

They are infact machines. They use a Gas to power themselves. The Gas is created when the cap ignites the powder.. the waste Gases are used to power the "machine"

He's right. I was also going to point out that your finger pulling the trigger is the source of kinetic energy. The stored energy in the combustibles inside the gun become kinetic when they're released by the mechanical trigger, which in turn propels the projectile.

I wonder if Mark would've said that if he knew he was agreeing with me. =)

Technically...  guns are mechanical devices, not machines.  I'm pretty sure "machines" have power sources.

Machine:

1. A device consisting of fixed and moving parts that modifies mechanical energy and transmits it in a more useful form.

2. A simple device, such as a lever, a pulley, or an inclined plane, that alters the magnitude or direction, or both, of an applied force; a simple machine.

3.  A system or device for doing work, as an automobile or a jackhammer, together with its power source and auxiliary equipment.

4.  A system or device, such as a computer, that performs or assists in the performance of a human task: The machine is down.

5.  An intricate natural system or organism, such as the human body.

6.  A person who acts in a rigid, mechanical, or unconscious manner.

7.  An organized group of people whose members are or appear to be under the control of one or more leaders: a political machine.

8.  A device used to produce a stage effect, especially a mechanical means of lowering an actor onto the stage.

9.  A literary device used to produce an effect, especially the introduction of a supernatural being to resolve a plot.

It doesn't really fall into any one of these if you ask me..  I'm just feeling nitpicky though..  :-P

YAAAAY, persnickety definition thread!

I would say definition #1 would cover firearms... even if you include the "power source" condition, a power source would be just about anything that provides the impetus for the "mechanical energy"... wind, water, draft animals, Red Bull...

While we're on the subject, maybe you firearm folks can advise me- what do you wear to shoot guns? Do I want to have on long sleeves? Boots, or sneakers OK? This will be an outdoor event at a sporting/country club.

Depends on what kind of guns and whether you're hunting with Dick Cheney. Boots would probably be a good idea, for traction and ankle support if you're shooting something that recoils. If you're gonna wear long sleeves, I'd go with light material if it's gonna be hot out. ;)

You're supposed to always wear eye and ear protection. Will goggles and earplugs be provided?
