Paper Hearts Posted July 7, 2006 Posted July 7, 2006 top how many!? :erm <{POST_SNAPBACK}> ^ Well, he could remove Johny Rotten, because Steve Jones played guitar for the Sex Pistols.
The_Dark Posted July 7, 2006 Posted July 7, 2006 The top 5 are in order of preferance.. the rest are in random order 1. Dave Glimore 2. BB King 3. Steve Vai 4. Yngwie Malmsteen 5. Les Paul 6. Jimmy Page 7. Steven Seagal (He plays far better than he acts) 8. Eric Clapton 9. Martin Mull (Yes, the actor.. saw him play with BB King once... wow) 10. Carlos Santana
Paper Hearts Posted July 7, 2006 Posted July 7, 2006 Anyone w/ the first name 'Mick' like Mick Ronson or Mick Jones. Also, Johny Marr has to go in at least like 7 of the top spots...someone here only listed him 6X. So that leaves one spot and that should probably go to Keith Richards because...he will survive nuclear winter. Keith Richards after nuclear winter is probably the one you'd want more, but I'll still list him now, to be fair.
Homicidalheathen Posted July 7, 2006 Posted July 7, 2006 Santana Hendrix Satriani Steve vai Eric Johnson Eddie VH Prince Roland Orzabal Stevie Ray vahn 'Flea' for Base. Oh yes Jimmy Page but thats 11
The_Dark Posted July 7, 2006 Posted July 7, 2006 He doesn't play in a band. He plays solo... like many Blues guitarists.

Blackmail Posted July 14, 2006 Posted July 14, 2006 Martin Gore should be in more of these lists....have you heard the guitar licks on 'Ultra' ?????
Paper Hearts Posted July 14, 2006 Posted July 14, 2006 Martin Gore should be in more of these lists....have you heard the guitar licks on 'Ultra' ????? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Martin Gore is a good player. I wouldn't put him in my list for favorite guitarists though. Once in a while I get in the mood for good guitar...and I can like listen to Hendrix or Zappa or whoever but I just don't feel satisfied until I listen to Marr. I don't think anyone could really figure out how to work a guitar compared to Marr. I mean Hendrix, was great...but he basically played blues...which I like, but it's like it's only really like one scale, it's easy. In fact, all those 60's guys pretty much just played blues. Sure Hendrix played upside down and all that...but these compositions he and his peers wrote were not all that complex, comparitively. Depech Mode blows my mind still, after many years and it's manily Gore responsible, but it's more like his overall songs...which usually didn't contain much guitar. Marr-the guitar on Girl Afraid still amazes me each and every time I hear it like it's brand new to me. A lot of his songs are like that for me.
Paper Hearts Posted July 14, 2006 Posted July 14, 2006 Actually Ha! I should not have listed Zappa and then started talking about those standard sort of 60s blues guys. Zappa was a MF. But I still like the way Marr played more...and I think* Marr was better technically, speaking.
Paper Hearts Posted July 14, 2006 Posted July 14, 2006 Here's something I'll use as an example: You can start learning to play the guitar and within a month or so, maybe less, you'll be able to figure out how to play a lot of the 60s stuff by ear... You can teach the guitar for years and not know what the fuck Marr is really doing. If you ever want to see a guitar instructor panic, bring in some Smiths.

John Maher (Johny Marr) dresses better and has better hair, too. Those are always factors with rock musicians. I look at the whole picture. I wish Amanda would come online right now and see your little post, because there would be a fight.

He didn't learn to play until the late 80's. Gore plays more bluesy riffs, Marr is a strummer. I think Gore's electro past hurts him in any debate here. Guitar World magazine actually did a huge article on Gore though. As for fashion, again, Martin Gore had horrible fashion in the 80's and he admits the dressing in drag was silly. Now he normally just wears black slacks and a black shirt, pretty low key. He also has decent hair nowadays. Johnny Marr looked really silly when he formed Electronic with New Order's Bernard Sumner. Marr got all Manchester acid house and wore baggy pants and striped shirts and wore sunglasses indoors. There is even a video on youtube where they lipsynched on top of the pops, both Sumner and Marr and dancing around like idiots, Marr is pretending to play guitar on a dance track that has no guitars and it's all really, really bad. Now with the Healers, Marr has shaggy hair like all the indie rock bands, he follows trands too much.

I remember picking up a Guitar World (or something like that) magazine at the store a while back just to browse through it, I didn't really buy it, just wanted to look through it, because it listed "the top 100 rock guitarists of all time". The bastards only put Marr at #7. Marr was actually designing clothes for a bit, recently. I was reading about it on the Healers website maybe 8 months ago. And Marr did so much more than strum! His rhythm rocks, yeah, but his appregios are rapid fire...and his tunings are crazy sometimes, indecipherable. And his progressions, oh my god! And such great taste, too, in the things he played...he doesn't like wank at all with it as the rest of these guitar heros do. But I have to say that Gore is great and I see where you're at.

I have to disagree with this one. I've played guitar for over 20 years and taught for 8 of those years and I can assure you that not everyone would be able to pick up on any songs by ear after just one month of playing. Most people do not have good enough ears to do that. I've heard people that have played for years and they still had trouble with a 4/4 time signature.

People can usually do like 'Satisfaction', the main riff or like 'Smoke on the Water', no lessons at all, I think.

No one else has a Zappa- personally I preffer Frank, but you MUST have a Zappa in your list or I mean, what are you on. Lennon wrote such great songs...not hard at all really, but the way he used the guitar was beautiful. Johnny Ramone=fucking lightining; I cannot do the speed limit if I'm listening to the Ramones in the car, at all. he rocked and again not really difficult stuff to play, but it sounds so amazing. Somtimes it's more of a matter of taste than technical ability.
