Steven Posted July 14, 2006 Posted July 14, 2006 Lennon was the master when it came to locking in on the rythim - yes imple but really he was the best at it and thats a the core of any great song, what not to play, how to stay in the pcoket, when to step out and then back in. Its hard to do well. I cant beleive none of us mentioned Robert Smith. Lately I like that kid from AFI as well.
Blackmail Posted July 14, 2006 Posted July 14, 2006 I'm just messing with you man. I remember picking up a Guitar World (or something like that) magazine at the store a while back just to browse through it, I didn't really buy it, just wanted to look through it, because it listed "the top 100 rock guitarists of all time". The bastards only put Marr at #7. Marr was actually designing clothes for a bit, recently. I was reading about it on the Healers website maybe 8 months ago. And Marr did so much more than strum! His rhythm rocks, yeah, but his appregios are rapid fire...and his tunings are crazy sometimes, indecipherable. And his progressions, oh my god! And such great taste, too, in the things he played...he doesn't like wank at all with it as the rest of these guitar heros do. But I have to say that Gore is great and I see where you're at. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I am not saying Gore is better, I just like his riffs better.
Paper Hearts Posted July 14, 2006 Posted July 14, 2006 Oh yeah, I know what you're saying blackmail. I think that's cool. And Steven, I sooo thought about Robert Smith! He's another one that just played sort of standard guitar and wrote some great sounding songs. Basically, my list, I know I have Marr at #1 and after that, I just can't decide.
Der Nister Posted July 14, 2006 Posted July 14, 2006 Other guitarists that I admire and that have had an influence on my are.. Uli Jon Roth (ex Scorpions) Micheal Shenkar (UFO) Malcolm Young Angus Young Steve Howe (Yes) Elliot Eastman (Cars) Dave Murry Adrian Smith Eddie Clark (of Motorhead) Jerry Cantrell Rick Craig (local Detroit guitarist) Tony Iommi Paul Gilbert Stevie Ray Vaughn Dave Grohl For me it's not always about how technical a guy can play - sometimes less is more. Other times I love to hear someone push the limits of what can be done. Both have a place in music.
Paper Hearts Posted July 14, 2006 Posted July 14, 2006 Jerry CantrellDave Grohl <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Wow, yeah, Cantrell did rock! I think Kurt Cobain has to be mentioned with Dave Grohl...and then if you mention those guys...you have to have Mark Arm and Steve from Mudhoney. Mark and Steve completely suck but they invented that whole grunge sound.

Jerry Cantrell actually put some color and flavor and a bit of a southern tiwst to grunge, which was needed because I grew tired of grunge quickly. Eddie Clark - forgot about him - loved him in Fastway
Hellion Posted July 14, 2006 Posted July 14, 2006 :devil Acouple of my favorites Glen Tipton,KK Downing/Judas Priest.Great guitarists
Der Nister Posted July 15, 2006 Posted July 15, 2006 I can't believe I forgot to mention the best British guitarist of the 70's Brian May. No one hear has put him in their list. That's kinda odd.
Der Nister Posted July 15, 2006 Posted July 15, 2006 ULI ROTH!!!! THE SAILS OF CHARON!!!!!!! His work with the Scorpions is flawless. They really brought out his Hendrix manerisms which took metal guitar to a new level. I think he shined most on the Virgin killer record.
phee Posted July 15, 2006 Posted July 15, 2006 Blackmail.... thankyou for putting Vernon Reid on your list....

Mark and Steve completely suck but they invented that whole grunge sound. If you're gonna go as far as to mention Mark and Steve then you absolutely need to mention Buzz Osbourne from the Melvins who single handedly influence every one of those Seatle bands. Everyone from Soundgarden to Mother love bone. The Melvins really changed the face of music in the mid 80's for that region.
Hellion Posted July 17, 2006 Posted July 17, 2006 I can't believe I forgot to mention the best British guitarist of the 70's Brian May. No one hear has put him in their list. That's kinda odd. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> He is in Queen,He is one of my favorites.
