I have never myself burned a US Flag and more than likely won'nt,But the United Nations Flag should be IMO,considering it has the world logo on it.

Some people favor it some do not,but when it come to a flag that represents the UN I have my own opinions on that.especially in this day and age.

I learned in scouts that if it hits the ground you have to burn it, because it touched the ground.

Personally I think they should be made out of a water proof fire proof material.

I heard your not suppose to let the bible touch the ground either, but burn it if it does? Never see anyone do that....

i'd heard that as well, but i was reading a site about proper care of flags, and it said that if the flag can be cleaned, there's no need to burn it. the only time burning is recommended is when the flag becomestoo dirty/old/worn out to properly /respectfully represent, and then the preffered method of disposal is by burning.

i've no idea if that particular site is entirely valid or not, but it made sense to me...

Good job, you killed her.

Anywho. Flags should only be burned if there is a real good reason, like the over use of a flag and it is worn out. Burning a flag because a country pissed you off, nu uh. Bad stuff in that one.

Seems to me that if we make destruction of our flag illegal then the freedom that it is supposed to represent is deminished. So...if you take away the liberty it symbolizes then you'd might as well burn it, because it means nothing at that point.

And non violent protest is assured by the constitution, it's freedom of speech, really.

Not that I ever participated in flag-burning.

Actually like I said, when we were in scouts we had an "all scout jamboree (sp?) at a local park where we'd camp over night and bring binoculors to look at the girl scouts accross the field. One year we lit one up and it was kind of like a funeral for a flag, there was a ceremony, etc...

I think it's interesting that the flag is such a powerful symbol to people. Personally, I respect the flag and what it means to me; therefore I would only burn it in a respectful manner. However, since it's so engrained into our hearts and minds, I have no problems with people burning it in order to evoke a reaction from others and jolt them out of their comfort zones. People just hate thinking and feeling for the most part. That's why I think they want burning banned.

its a tacky form of self expression, burning the American flag.

But - it should be yoru right to do so - yoru self expression gauranteed by the blood of countless veterans.

still, I say tacky because those who would burn it would never have the huevos to then leave this country to embrace another. If your going to burn it - go all the way man, get the fuck out. and quit speaking english while your at it.

by the way Brass - that Bible Ball comment....had to chuckle.

I would put it in the same category as Marilyn Manson (circa 1996): pointlessly shocking. It's like slapping someone to prove your point (and about as effective).

This is nads, I still agree with like everyone on this topic.

Only thing is, Steven- shouldn't the people burning the flag have the right to try and change the things they hate about the country instead of just leaving? I think that's where the true strength of the U.S. is... the power of the little people to make big things happen.

I agree that it's tacky and there's a difference between making a bullshit "statement" and getting something accomplished.

I fail to see how burning the UN flag accomplishes any more than burning the US flag.

And I'm really shocked that you of all people don't believe in a global government. It would eliminate the nation you so desperately hate, wouldn't it?

Hahaha. Which nation is that? There's plenty on my shit-list right now... Not to thread jack.

Edit: second part directed at Darque Metallion: Umm yeah, I don't quite get the point of burning the UN flag either. If you dislike the UN, you've got the right president right now. I mean, didn't he run on the "I won't kiss the UN's ass" platform?

As far as laws are concerned, most people who burn flags in public are violating fire codes and get arrested anyway. As far as I know, there have been very few instances of people burning the American flag in public so there doesn't seem to be a need to have a huge debate and congressional hearings over such a non-issue.

I remember the first time the flag burning amendment came out of the wood-work...remember George Bush I? More flags were burned during that time than ANY time in history as far as I could tell. Frankly, if an amendment passes, I'm going to burn it the next day. I might even piss on it. Because as far as I'm concerned, 3/4 of the people in the U.S. just ACTUALLY did what I am symbollically going to do.

As far as the U.N. -- don't burn the flag for the same reason burning the U.S. flag is tacky. The U.N. is what the member nations make it. If they shit on it, it's going to be full of shit. The idea and concept of it is most likely not what you are upset about, but how ineffective the U.N. is when it's used as a toy of the more powerful member nations. Unless the concept of the U.N. IS what you're upset about...then go a head and burn it, just make sure it's made out of something that doesn't cause toxic smoke....ick.
