that was my life in Cali...uber expensive, county taxes, state taxes, and every 6 months the county would re-assess my house and hit me for increased "supplimental" taxes (LA County is famous for that neat littel trick) in the thousands beyond my allready impounded taxes coming out of my mortgage payment.

It could never be 100%. Police are needed (unless martial law sets in), food service, basic things, electricity, gas, water, heat. Basically the only people who will be able to afford those things though are those that supply them. In any case if unemployment tops out at (I'd say) 40% we'd have jobs for police, since crime would be out of control.

I drank a pint of jager and then drank 5 long islands I went with my friend Tara that I always go with and we took her car. I ended up puking and they threw me out so she took too long to come out of the bar so I tried my keys on her ignition and it worked. So I stole her car lol and drove myself home. Um, no. To just about all of it. Copper and Iron may be abundant... but it's all pretty expensive to mine now. The easy stuff is all long minded out. If the market ever gets starved enough... it may be worth the effort to mine it again. Fish? again, not so much... not anymore. Far to much Mercury in the fish now for commercial fishing.

Farming is where it's at. Did you know michigan grows 80% of the concord grapes that are used in the USA? and lets not forget the Cherrys... and Potaotes... and Soy beans... shit laods of Soy beans. Sugar beats... cash crops like peppers, onions, melons and carrots...

all grow here in abundance. Mint. Various types fluorish in our enviroment.

Michigan can, if anyone tried, become the cornacopia of the USA. We have thousands of fields that noone farms anymore.

Now... if we could get farming going at full scale... and build a few Ethanol and biodiesal plants.. we could use the "waste" products from the farms to produce fuel for the farming equipment.

Take potatoes.. One field of harvested potatoes leaves behind tons of the dead plants. This is normally just ground up and tossed back into the fields. We could collect it... or a good portion of it and refine it into biodiesal and/or ethanol.

I took a class in highscool on Michigan history and civics. The teacher I had was/is a major geek on the subject. Anyway... he would be the first to point out, that if it came down to it.. Michigan is the only state that could exists as an independant nation. We have enough natural resources and farm land not only sustain our population but have enough left over for trade. We also have the infra structure for manufacturing of goods... mining, salt...

We can, if we have to, sustain ourselves. It would take work and time. It would not be easy or fast. Even with all the obsticales we face now... we can infact become an economic leader, an enviromental leader and a leader into a Petroluem free world.

it's cool that he digs michigan that much, but i doubt we're the only state that could support a population independently. it would just depend on how much technology we were willing to give up, i guess.

Mark... Funny you mention mining copper and minerals. There's an article in the current Wired about a guy who's company is developing the ability to mine the ocean's floors around lava chimneys. Apparently they're very rich in mineral deposits, including copper and gold.

first of all it has to pump its water in from outside sources. sure it looks great on postcards nd TV, but Cali is basically a big ass over polluted smog filled desert. when they lose their ability to actually pump that water - your going to see some freaky deakage from the oh so stable population.
