Yeah the bs gas prices are back, rumour has it it might be up to if not more than 5 bucks a gallon, these pos CEOs need to be shot,IMO,this is why the economy and cost of living is so out of control, due to greedy Fucking assholes.OPEC needs to be disbanded, this country need to go the route of Brazil, which is self sufficient on sugar cane (fuel)

Yeah we need to go over there and blow them bastards up and just take the oil. ROME STYLE!!! Two bucks a gallon or .20 cents? What would you prefer?

Something needs to be done for sure. I've been riding a bike to work lately due to the gas prices.

Alternative fuels is what needs to be done. Oil supplies are finite people. The supply is getting used up. Go buy a diesel and save your cooking grease.

That would work for you. You have a lot of hot air....

fuck dude that didn't even make sense lol

Hot air = Lot's to say (and not in the "good" sense)

What planet are you from? Maybe this is a phrase before your time. I'll have to consult with the other village elders on that ....

i'm familiar with the idiom, but what does that have to do with putting a sail on my car? maybe a hot air balloon

Posted

I'm pretty sure it works on sails too. :-P

Yeah... I was reading $4.00 by the end of the summer... and now I have no one to carpool with :(

Looks like we may be down to one car this summer, just to save gas money ... at least when we can.

jeez, the mental images... first someone blowing hot air on a sail attached to a car to get it to go.. then speaking of blowing.. the word sail reminded me of a navy type person... the whole combination was too much, hot air, blowing, and navy...

Gas "cost" is actually near a historical low and have been for the last two decades. We just have been so used to the historical low that it "going up" seems so painful.

Adjusted for inflation (which you have to do or cost is fairly meaningless over time) and adjusted for average household income (also important) since the late 80s the "Real cost" of gas is far less than it was in years past.

Note the skin tone line

Cost of living in this country is getting really bad,but wages are never to the cost of living, they just stay where they are, even when it gets to $10 a gallon, along with everything else going up,it will never stop.

Posted

Inflation is the value of a dollar calculated with "the cost of living" in it (nowadays known as the CPI). Which is what that chart is mainly trying to point out. That "price / cost of living vs inflation adjusted gas price" is at a historical low.

Thats a bit of a hackjob explaining it on my part, but its basically clear i think.

troy, does that data take into account the median individual income, the average individual income, median or average household incomes, or the minimum wage? cuz federal minimum wage right now is still amazingly 5.15... same as it was when gas was a little over a dollar per gallon.

I heard some talking head on msnbc say that the oil companies reasons (this time) for fuel prices going up is because they have to make different fuel grades for Chicago and New York and Texas ect. - in other words, as many of us did not know, all our cars seem to require different types of gas.

So I'm guessing that I can't fill up my car with gas that is designed for say Toledo, Ohio because they have different fuel needs than our cars in Michigan - I mean WTF!?!?!?!?!?!?

Also, I found a mobile gas station on 7 mile last weekend that closed down all their pumps and posted signs that read " Due to price hikes we refuse to sell gas"

All I can say is......thanks oil administration er I mean, thanks Bush.

Well in that case, while they want to change grades of fuel, and because of Michigan's economy, why don't they just make cheap gas to run our vehicles with? That way, they are helping the economy up here and saving money on making fuel up here. How many other excuses are they going to come up with? A war in other countries is causing the fuel cost to rise, a hurricane has damaged facilities making fuel, standard of living cost....hell, none of this was a factor back in the day, and all these things were happening back then too.

we drive all the same cars throughout this country, and if you've ever driven to toledo, the gas still works. so i doubt that it's "different kinds of gas" in each city, it must be something else.

unless you were being sarcastic, in which case, yeah. that's a fucking line of bullshit if i ever heard one

There are different "kinds" of gas. Every State has different standards they impose. Cleaner burning (higher octane ratings) are required in some states. Other states repiure certain additives. My father ran the Crude unit in a refinery for 32 years. He talked about this crap all the time.

Posted

i read somewhere that 87 octane is the minimum pretty much across the board, except for higher altitudes where it's 85. i see 86 at some sunocos, too, which I don't understand... and the ratings generally only go up to 93 except super-octane racing fuels and shit, so how many grades is that, total? 6 or so, tops?

Posted

It's not the grade of fuels it's the "additives" package that causes the variances. Big cities have more smog and pollutants so the gas formulations for them might be different even then the more rural areas. Adds a few pennies to the cost I think. Personally, it would make sense from the economies of scale point of view to make one blend of each octane and be done with it.

It's worth keeping in mind too that these formulations affect a variety of things. Drivability for one... In the winter they put additives in to help cold starting and prevent gas freeze, in the summer they try to help hot restarting, etc.
