Well here's an idea I caught floating around again, it's been floating around about 2 years now but it might make an effective idea. It's a simple boycott really. I copied and pasted the part that just gets straight to the point below...

For the rest of this year, DON'T purchase ANY gasoline from the two biggest companies (which now are one), EXXON and MOBIL. If they are not selling any

gas, they will be inclined to reduce their prices. If they reduce their prices, the other companies will have to follow suit.

So it's simple see, just boycott Exxon and Mobil. When you think about it, it's simple economics of supply and demand, and the merchant trying to meet the equilibrum.

the farther they reduce their prices below their competitors', the more people will buy exxon/mobil gas. the boycott would fail overnight.

Get better jobs then you won't have to worry about it.

Or take the bus.

This is definately getting out of hand for everyone. These oil companies are leeches. If gas goes up to $5 I will have to catch the bus since I work in Canton or find another job closer to where I live. What I don't get is why can't we get a cheaper barrel of oil from Iraq that we're already pouring billions of US tax dollars into.

Marc, the grade of fuel has a huge affect on the cost. Making low octane gas is easy and extremly cheap... say about 50octane... but cars wont run worth a shit on it. Like.. you might make 20-30mph and forget a small grade in the road. just to get to 87 octane triples the refining cost. Keep in mind, you rearanging molecular bonds and how the molecule is shaped. (which affect it's ability to bond with Oxygen and how fast it does)

BTW, gas prices are going up because our few working refinerys are falling apart from age. We cant refine to meet our demand. We have to purchase finished fuel grade gas from other countrys, not just oil.. you never see those prices posted anywhere nor talked about. As it stand, when all of our refinerys are working.. we can only make enough finished fuel to power 60% of the cars in this country. Our refinerys are all old to boot. 30+ years for everyone in this country. All of them need major overhauls to bring them up to full production (some are only running at about 30% production becaues anymore would cause them to explode.. which some have been doing lately), they need to have moderen eqiupment installed to bring down cost of operation and more need to be built.

We also really need to kick biofuels in the ass. Get more alchohol refinerys up and running and get them tied into the system. There is no damn reason that every gas pump in the country shouldn't be pumping out at least 10% ethanol if not 20%.

We live in what was once called the "Bread basket of the World" we have the ability to produce more grain than the whole fucking world can use as food. We need to put the farmers back to work.. bring those damn farms back online and stop paying the farmers to not farm. We can and should be feeding ourselves, our pets and everyone else in the world with our grain products and fuel our cars with it. We have the resources and the ability... now to just grow the balls to do it.

Technically... What you're saying is that the refineries are the bottleneck and the cause of high prices. But what you just described looks to me like corporate greed. They'd rather not invest in better refineries for as long as they can so they can reap the profits.

From what I read, the ethanol based fuels don't entirely make sense for two reasons: One, they require a lot of energy to make the grains into fuel and two, they don't provide a ton of energy per unit by volumn. The second part won't matter when we run out of petroleum based fuels, but the first part will. Pure electrics make the most sense as long as the electricity comes from renewable sources. And the discovery of better battery technology then we have now. I see the short term solution as semi-bio fueled plug-in hybrids. Diesels in particular. I think the basic tech of the Chevy Volt is right. It still needs better batteries though. I don't see us hitting a critical mass on all these technologies for another 10-20 years.
