Study Says Smoking Ban In Bars And Restaurants Is Better For Health And No Harm On Business.

Also, for the record, the smoking ban is hurting bar business. Maybe not restaurant business, but definately bars.

Not sure I buy that.

I have lived in New York & all over California both before & after public-building smoking-bans were issued.

The bars were & are doing just fine.

URL wars are better than flame wars, yo. I love a verifiable source.

I didn't feel like reading through 3 pages of posts, so I apologize if any of this has been said already.

When Charlie told me that the bars in California were non-smoking, I had trouble imagining it, but after seeing it for myself, they seemed to be doing a pretty decent business.

I'm a non-smoker, so I may be a bit biased, but I have to say it was nice not waking up the next morning with my hair and clothes reeking of smoke and my throat feeling like someone ran sandpaper over it, like I always do after a night at City, Luna, Mephistos, etc.

Its personal freedom vs public safety that's is the bottom line. Its not an across the board issue (since it never is its allways a step by step process.) These days personal freedom gets very little real support. There is a lot of rhetoric and strong language in support of it, but when it comes down to it people choose what they perceive as public safety over individual freedom. I don't mean to lead to one over the other, since both are important.

I personally would prefer to not have to suck down the smoke, but i wouldn't want to force that opinion on other people and businesses. Regardless if its "good" or "bad" for business. I used to smoke but don't now since my overall health hit the shittier, its quite clear to me how much the smoke fucks my health over, odd how i couldn't just learn from the mountains of studies and such. I wont waste people's time splitting hairs about what "smoke" is or what i mean by "smoke."

If people don't like the smoke, don't go where they allow it.

Having said that, I'm not particularly fire breathing about this issue. If smoking was banned in public places tomorrow i might say a short prayer (aka talk to myself) over another personal freedom infringement and another blow to free market capitalism, (same way i did with motorcycle helmets) but I'd move on fairly rapidly. Not much of an issue for me one way or the other. Much larger issues to worry about.

Here I go....

I used to smoke a hell of lot more than I do now. I have one here and there. Yes, I'm paying for the years that I smoked by hacking up my lungs now, but I know that in the future, I will be healthier for it.

As far as banning smoking in public places such as restaurants and bars, I think is ridiculous. I think that the government should have no say in whether or not a private establishment can have smoking or not. That should be the owners choice. If they were allowed smoking in the first place, it should not be changed. If they didn't allow smoking in the first place, then it shouldn't be changed either.

As far as whether or not business is affected, I cannot say one way or another because I myself do not own a business. I could maybe see business being affected by smokers not frequenting the establishment because they are not able to smoke and that is their choice.

I have a friend of mine that refused to go into a place that didn't allow for smoking because he felt that was taking away his right. That is his decision to go somewhere else. He wasn't bitching at anyone in particular, that just how he felt.

When I smoked, I would always asked people if the smoke would bother them. They would usually reply no because they wouldn't be in a place that allowed smoking if the smoke bothered them that much. I was very polite about that. Now that I don't smoke, I am not going to go somewhere and bitch that people are smoking. That's just dumb. I know how it feels to be fiending for a cigarette. I can make the decision to not go to that place if I don't want to smell the smoke. If I choose to go to that place, I have NO right to complain about the people that are smoking. The only time that I would have a right to complain about that is if there was someone smoking in the non-smoking area.
