Race...why is this word still used?

Recommended Posts

Like banning a book.... banning a word does the same thing

...we don't have to ban it...I think if enough people start using different terminology it will catch on.....

..when using semantics & wit as ones only weapons...trying to change the world...it becomes necessary to leave the box permanently...

because of the differences of the breeds of humans;

And what do you call that if not Race? Do you really think the word "Breed" is more positive then race? If I were to sit back and say "That Breed is more likely to die of a heart attack then our breed son"... That sounds just as bad correct?

Taking away the power of the word, takes away the power from the people who use it badly.

Sounds more clinical than "their Race is more likely to have sickle cells"

Kinda' sounds better to my ear.....

I had to explain skin tones to my 5 year old...& he understood the differences when explained within the context of my "Dog Analogy"...

See, that's where you're wrong in the way you explain it, KIDS may think it's all gravy, but adults get kind of sketchy when you address them like they're animals. I'm not saying we're not animals, I'm just saying there's negative connotations with the word breed more so than race. This is not going to catch you many flies, try using honey not vinegar.

Breed, to me seems more demeaning than using the word race..

But the Human Race is guilty of hubris{marked lack of humility}

I think that we need it as a group to be reminded that we are animals a bit...

Then we get into personal preference.... to me... a breed is something that is not usually applyed to non-human things, breeds of dogs, plants, etc.... If I were to say to one of my co-workers who is black "you know, I am a different race then you.... although we both really like redheads" It would be a lot less offensive then "you know, I am a different breed of human being then you.... although we both really like redheads" That to me might get me fired.

How do any of us change anything? we start by changing ourselves.. this change will show to those around us, and those people will notice and those people will change. Change is contagious, but the problem is, people see negativity as contagious, but positivity is also contagious! So spread the word!!!! and hugs .. :) cause I like them. :)

I'm not saying you're wrong, I'm saying in order for something to catch on, you need to use a word that doesn't seem so negative to the average person. You use the word breed to someone who doesn't know or understand any better, and they will automatically take offense, and that's not what you're going for here, you want them to embrace it, you don't want resistance.. the word Breed is going to get you the resistance you aren't looking for.

EDIT TO SAY: Resistance is futile..

Still you're missing the point, changing the terminology, even if it does catch on, will not change the how people use and interpret it's meaning.

You have to change people. Changing words will not change people. You can only change people through education, (as has been stated).

Change it if you want, right now. I hereby give you the power! What word do you want to use instead of "race"? This is your change to make a difference. I will, for one, use any word you decided to use.

No more talking, and I'm completely serious about this, I actually want to see if my view is misguided and your's is right. Change the word this very instant and I vow to use any word you choose. I honestly want to see what happens.

oh...no one can really fire me...so I guess it is up to me, eh!?!

Good thing I like bitching about things...

I have been openly teaching by the means you speak of...through Coffee house conversation/debate....poetry....I do not oppose the continuance of the use of said tools...

There is but one Race...and many Breeds...

That is what word I have been working into my vocab...for this year about...maybe longer...

Breed it is!

Race no longer exists, delete it from your vocabs.

Equating us with dogs, doesn't really seem to be better in my opinion, but I said I'd go with your word.

So with this new vocabulary, (just testing here), my breed is white American, right?

I feel like a dog.. woof.. :/

Like I said, negativity.. not going to catch.. I still think you need a different word. :/

I'll bite....

So the breed of people in Africa are more heart attack prone.... and when that breed breeds in Africa because of the lack of Birth Control and education the African Breed gets more AIDS....

I think you should use a word that's completely got nothing attached to it..like Odim's fleorg..

or even ecar or maybe deerb

If you hadn't noticed the last two word are spelled backwards.. maybe because they seem negative forward, they may see positive backward?

Sounds silly either way..

How about...people are people???

Posted

OK, I'll start using breed. I will go so far as to use the word Breeder on individuals.

So, i think I will go call my breeder and see how the other pups in our pack are doing.

Not sure replacing "race" with "people" is going to work either...

using Phee's example:

So the people of people in Africa are more heart attack prone.... and when that people breeds in Africa because of the lack of Birth Control and education the African People gets more AIDS....

hrm....

But whatever you want, it's your word!

Not trying to bust your chops mate.... just things to think about.

BUT

Breed

So when someone says, "I don't like that breed moving into my nieghborhood... they lower my property value and want to have sex with my white breeded daughter... and I heard that breed likes to steal stuff"

That is somehow better then?

"I don't like that race moving into my nieghborhood... they lower my property value and want to have sex with my white race daughter... and I heard that race likes to steal stuff."

Like I said.... the person is the problem not the word.

I think we may have lost the point here.....

It is not the word 'race' that needs to be changed.....It is the use.....

Perhaps teaching our children and others that we are all part of the Human 'race' may help.....

Rev... just do this for me... Explain Sickle Cell anemia and who it is most likely going to affect... without using the word race. Nor can you use skin color in the explination... because it actually has nothing to do with who is most susceptible.

Thats a start, as long as we don't go to far and just become thought police.

Race...why is this word still used?, Seems to show our ignorance...

That was the point that started the thread....

That is why it was discussed

Pretending that "racial" issues don't exist is a common thing, but unfortunate. Its important to get things out in the open or they cant ever be fixed or discussed intelligently. Trying to just sweep "racial" issues under the carpet is well-intentioned but problematic and unrealistic. Its sad but true, that racial issues do need to be talked about.

Especially in Academia and political realms there is almost a child-like kid-gloved desire to pretend there is no such thing as a racial issue.

I heard some quote on the radio the other day something like:

"Today was a monumental day in history, today a politician spoke to the American people about the subject of race... as if they were adults."

I'm thinking I'm going to be moving to AZ, soon! Can't wait! I friggin' love it here! The heat doesn't bother me at all and the best part? NO SNOW!!! (S.N.O.W. - Shit  No One Wants)   Been staying in Bullhead City where the kids and grandkids live. Next, we're going to the wife's cousin's which is a ways North of Kingman, in the middle of nowhere, where we actually plan to move.   I really like Bullhead. It's a nice little town. Not overcrowded like Colorado Springs has become, at all. Very light traffic, reasonable prices on everything, low taxes, etc. The river offers a lot to do, with a lot of beaches and campgrounds all around it.   But yeah even though we've been over 110º-115º F just about every day,  I can handle it!  What I can't handle anymore, is snow and being cold. Just tired of it. Give me the desert over a blizzard any day!

Nope, we wasn't doing anything. I didn't want to go by myself.  I ended up doing karaoke here. It would of been a perfect day to go, though.
