I guess I just don't understand why this is important. No matter who the president and vice president are, it will be business as usual after the election. We will lose more of our freedoms and the Federal Reserve will continue to manipulate the economy.

yes....and this was back in 1935!!!

73 years ago. I hardly think that one mans speach about his opinion on Alaska as a strategic front, from an era where things were much socailly and politically different, has much bearing on our modern times.

I'm sure that similar speeches were made about other states as well, during World War 2, the Bay of Pigs, Vietnam, Korea, etc, etc....

How's this for major experience?

Yeah, to most people Alaska doesn't mean much. But it's isolated from the rest of the US. It has more land mass than any other state and more natural resources than any other state. There's foreign policy every day in dealing with Canada. Whoop-de-shit, Canada, but international commerce and politics is a lot different than interstate commerce and politics. Also, Russia is right across the Bering Straight and their invasion of Georgia is making us look at them a little weary. Homeland Security has a nightmare trying to secure that border. Palin has a lot more responsibility in Alaska than we give her credit for. Short term governor of Alaska impresses me a lot more than long term governor of almost any other state.

I'm gonna have to go "maverick" on the pack, here.

I do like Palin.

But really now--Gov. Granholm has similar (if not more in depth) dealings with the foreign power of Canada everyday. And Gov. Granholm has double the experience of Gov. Palin.

Would Granholm be a reasonable choice for the Democratic ticket? (technically as a Canadian-born citizen she cannot be named, but for argument sake....)

The answer is a resounding "no." Thank goodness Palin is not the top of the Repub ticket.

oooo...and not ONCE was Alaska or any American Territory mentioned within that article...it clearly states that Russia is doing oil searches IN THE ARCTIC CIRCLE...last time I checked this map, while a decent portion of Alaska is within the Arctic Circle, there is MUCH, MUCH more of the Arctic Circle that is outside of US territory...and hey...look at that...there is a long chunk of Russia that happens to be there too....

that article does not back the idea of Russia being a militaristic threat to the US.

Does Granholm deal with Japan? China? How about Soth Korea?

Alaska posted merchandise exports of $883 million to Japan in 2007. Japan was followed by China ($716 million), South Korea ($703 million), Canada ($548 million), and Germany ($202 million).

Yes to all the nations you mentioned. As you know, Michigan deals heavily in automobile manufacturing, parts, engineering--as do all the countries you listed above. Granholm has traveled extensively & overseas in support of Michigan's economic development.

I still wouldn't think she should be a first-choice contender for the VP nomination.

I'm thinking I'm going to be moving to AZ, soon! Can't wait! I friggin' love it here! The heat doesn't bother me at all and the best part? NO SNOW!!! (S.N.O.W. - Shit  No One Wants)   Been staying in Bullhead City where the kids and grandkids live. Next, we're going to the wife's cousin's which is a ways North of Kingman, in the middle of nowhere, where we actually plan to move.   I really like Bullhead. It's a nice little town. Not overcrowded like Colorado Springs has become, at all. Very light traffic, reasonable prices on everything, low taxes, etc. The river offers a lot to do, with a lot of beaches and campgrounds all around it.   But yeah even though we've been over 110º-115º F just about every day,  I can handle it!  What I can't handle anymore, is snow and being cold. Just tired of it. Give me the desert over a blizzard any day!

Nope, we wasn't doing anything. I didn't want to go by myself.  I ended up doing karaoke here. It would of been a perfect day to go, though.
