I am waiting to see if Obama backs off his support and high praise for his good friend Kwame.

He's probably doing so--in exactly the same way Republicans avoided discussing Congressman Larry Craig's gay bathroom incident that just so happened to occur in the same city as the Republican Convention. Family Values, indeed. Both sides have dirty laundry issues they'd prefer not to discuss--I'm sure there's plenty more fodder on both sides for those who find it relevant.

Except I don't remember McCain actually claiming to be close friend with Craig.

And when did being caught being gay rank up there with perjury, contempt of court and lying under oath.

For many conservatives, being gay is worse. It's anathema.

but, we are not talking about conservatives or being gay.

Senator McCain's chummy, arm-in-arm relationship with George W Bush is even more of an interesting story than Obama's retreat from the former administrator of a large, mostly black city.

Congressman Craig was not caught "being gay." He was charged with soliciting sex in a public bathroom from an undercover police officer.

Oh, the utter joy that is being utterly helpless in the face of a city slowly circling the drain. It makes me feel all fuzzy inside. I bet getting stabbed in the face would feel just about the same.

The problem is not a particular man or woman, or even a corrupt police department. Say, did anyone else notice that Detroit's police chief announced her retirement on the same day that Kwame Kilpatrick pled guilty? It seems worthy of mentioning. The problem is a dysfunctional city charter and a dysfunctional county-city relationship.

Now, council man Kenyatta has offered a step in the right direction, that being a proposal to change part of the charter that deals with the removal of the mayor for wrongdoing. That being said, Governor Granholm had the power to remove the mayor from office months ago.

Did you know that Detroit city council members are elected at large? What that means, really is that council members have no cares for specific areas or ills in the various neighborhoods of Detroit. Essentially, the city council is not filled with stewards of the many interests of the 138 square miles that is Detroit proper... city council members are nothing more than wanna-be mayors that cannot muster up enough support for anything more than council.

On the other hand, Ken Cockrel Jr., the son of a committed public servant, and whose step-mother is a former city council member, seems to have been born along a parallel life story as that of Kwame Kilpatrick, son of a powerful congress woman.

However, Cockrel's father died of a heart attack, while Kilpatrick's father divorced his mother. Kilpatrick went to law school, while Cockrel became a journalist. What does it all mean?

I don't have a crystal ball, but when you annoy Monica Conyers enough to call you "Shrek", you are likely doing something right.

Hmm... perhaps if Mayor Archer runs and wins the governor's seat being vacated by Granholm due to term limits, and Ken Cockrel can win re-election as mayor, we might see an actual change in the way the city is run... for a few years.

The city charter is simply out of date, and the suburbs have to start thinking beyond their borders. Maybe I will try to get that petition to turn all of Wayne county into something resembling a cohesive community sooner rather than later...

There are much more pressing issues that require addressing rather than the town charter...many things that Cockrel said needed to be addressed in his speech. Everything should come after the forensic audit.

If we continue to ignore the blatant and obvious flaws of the city charter, we leave ourselves vulnerable to another Kwame Kilpatrick.

Every day of my life, since 1980, nearly thirty people have fled from Detroit. That is 210 people a week. 840 a month, 10,080 a year.

You want to know why crime has finally come down in Detroit? There are fewer people to stab.

No, I cannot rely on a cult of personality to save Detroit. Cockrel will probably be a competent and thoughtful mayor. What about the next guy?

It's not impossible to revamp the charter AND fix the other problems in Detroit at the same time, either.

I never said it was impossible....but I think if Cockrel already knows that he is going to be jumping into a briar bush of problems...and I also think he knows that everything needs to get sorted out, and carefully looked at...and if he goes in there with guns blazing and bullets firing in every direction, without taking aim a a few problems at a time....his term as Mayor will be severely limited indeed.
