Article 19 Section 1 of the 1874 Arkansas Constitution states that "No person who denies the being of a God shall hold any office in the civil departments of this State, nor be competent to testify as a witness in any court.

Sucks to be me in one of those states then. Meh, so much discrimination it's not even funny. Fuck Arkansas (if that even really is a state...) and those other ones. Don't need 'em.

Damn, and for a minute there I though there was either a raid going on or that I needed to pay my cable bill .

so, as long as i believe in a god, i can serve? does that include beings like satan? or, if satan isn't classified as a god, how does one define a god?

this has got to go down in flames as religious discrimination.

if it doesn't, we're all fucked. seriously...

I don't do that...they just get pissed at me because i pose a valid argument of why this so called, "God" isn't real.

*sigh* What a non-issue. It's moot. All such laws were ruled unconstitutional in 1961.

But to answer your question...

Satan is not a God, Satan is an Angel... but if you beleive in Satan, you beleive in God. I mean, you can't beleive in one side of a coin.

This is true.... Satanists are actually buying into Christianity by worshiping a part of the er... religion/mythology/theologica structure.

Although I do not agree w/ the Atheists.. I think those laws, which no longer exist, where fucked.

heh, guess i should have read the article first, huh!? anyway, i get what you're saying... i probabably chose poorly with the "satan" example. my point was more along the lines of, who determined what "god" was a valid one, which wasn't? didn't/don't pagans worship gods? (i haven't studied enough to know if they classify them as gods, energies, or beings, etc...) anyway, feel free to extrapolate this argument to a religion that suits the discussion, beyond x-tianity. how would one define god-worship, and which gods were relevant/worthy?

obviously, it's a moot point now, but the concept still intrigues me, in a "wtf" kind of way.

shuttin' up now...

Yeah I showed it to my father and he said "well I believe" and I said "that doesn't make it right does it?" Then I had to explain it to him.

I mean if an Atheist and witnesses a murder and doesn't want to testify because they're friends with the guy or something then they have a way out.

Also just because they're not constitutional doesn't mean they're not still enforced illegally. I mean if it wasn't this wouldn't be an issue anymore.

Perhaps you are falling for the same trap as Torn... as in, you need to read the article. It's an issue because some lawmaker wants to waste the time and money to remove an old law that is on the books but no longer enforced.
