Too many Holidays

Recommended Posts

:devil I am not too sure but it seems to me that our country has more holidays than any other in the world. I am not talking about major holidays but some of these other ones: like election day, secretaries day etc, etc, etc. I would not be surprised if they had corruption day or screw over the taxpayer day. but as I was saying I do not think that we need all these oddball holidays , hey most of us have to work on these days anyway, thats not a holiday to me.

You think Election day is a minor thing?

I don't... in fact I think it is more important than the 4th of July

I think Hallmark makes half these things up as a gimmick to make more money.... :whistling

While I have to say election day is...sorta, you know, important & stuff, overall I agree. The one I really cannot wrap my head around is Sweetest Day, which I refer to as Valentine's Day II: The Resurrection.

I never heard of Sweetest Day until I came to Michigan. Apparently it is a Michigan/Ohio invention (too lazy right now to look it up again on the web) that is spreading like an ugly virus to the rest of the states, heh.

I never heard of it until a friend of mine said something about it.

the caribbean islands have more holidays than you could believe... and i'm talking "close everything down" holidays... drove me nuts going to places only to find they're closed for "mocko jumby day"

Actually the entire point of election day is to give people the day off so they can go and vote. It's the most important holiday ever, EVER.

as important as it is....apparently my employers never see it that way because I never get that day off, ever.

Well if I don't get it off of work or get paid time and 1/2, then it's not a holiday to me. Nuff said.

Sweetest Day has been around since 1922 when it was invented by Herbert Birch Kingston in the Cleveland area. He wanted to let the orphans, shut-ins and other forgotten people know that they were loved too. So, on the first Sweetest day the actress Ann Pennington presented 2000+ paperboys with boxes of candy as a show of gratitude for thier public service. It has slowly grown and spread over the years... It's sopposed to be a day when you think about the people you don't normally think about.

Here's a question....

Veterans Day.

Howe many Vets have you seen that were allowed that day off with full pay as a thank you for the years and risk they put in?

Yeah...... me neither.

And I'm a Veteran.

....just a thought....

I'm with you. Holidays all feel like opportunities for crass commercialism any more. Yeah... I could redirect my own celebration of them back to thier orginal meaning... but I prefer to do this on a smaller basis, every day.

So Kelly... What are we doing for Thanksgiving? :wink

I am so glad that I haven't let the woes of the modern world steal away the... Actually.. I'm not sure what was stolen away from people who hate holidays, but something is definetly gone.

Let me put it this way....

1: Blown WAY out of porportion

a. That would be a personel view, many would disagree.

2: There is nothing sentimental about them

b. I have grande memorys of the holidays as a child, I hope I am giving my children the same.

3: Most common time to commit suicide statistically (Namingly X-Mas)

c. We all have to give up fun because of some people are so self absorbed that they have to kill themselves?

4: The only time people give - and expect

d. Really? I seem to run into people expecting to be given life on a silver platter all the time. (I call them socialists)

5: Traditional? No. Tradition is passed down. No holiday carries the original meaning anymore

e. Really? last I checked Valitines was still about showing your Lover how much you love them... Christmas was still a celebration of the birth of Christ (except in non-christian homes) and Thanksgiving was still about saying thankyou for your life.

6: STRESS

f. Thats life.

7: Broke

g. You don't need money to celebrate most holidays... Dont give in to the commercialism.

8: Sad

h. What better reason to have a party a cheer yourself up?

9: Broken homes tend to show themselves more so around these times

g. uh-huh.... I don't see your point.

10: Scatter brains

i. What were we talking about?

I have to agree with Dark on most of these points, if the holidays are bad for you, don't celabrate them, don't spoil it for others.

I would say the only thing that makes too many holidays, is when you consider election day a holiday so you can get off work, go vote, then get paid to have the rest of the day off. right?

The socialists love you too, TD.

I'm thinking I'm going to be moving to AZ, soon! Can't wait! I friggin' love it here! The heat doesn't bother me at all and the best part? NO SNOW!!! (S.N.O.W. - Shit  No One Wants)   Been staying in Bullhead City where the kids and grandkids live. Next, we're going to the wife's cousin's which is a ways North of Kingman, in the middle of nowhere, where we actually plan to move.   I really like Bullhead. It's a nice little town. Not overcrowded like Colorado Springs has become, at all. Very light traffic, reasonable prices on everything, low taxes, etc. The river offers a lot to do, with a lot of beaches and campgrounds all around it.   But yeah even though we've been over 110º-115º F just about every day,  I can handle it!  What I can't handle anymore, is snow and being cold. Just tired of it. Give me the desert over a blizzard any day!
