Lamest Thing Ever #5:

People who are only pretending they can't walk.

Not that I KNOW anyone who does that.

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

I actually have done a test in the past on a patient that proved to quite an extent that he still had function of his legs after an accident. This patient apparently had his spinal cord impinged to a point where he could no longer walk, but when I performed a test on his legs I got a normal response. Thing is, I performed this test at the same time I was performing an EEG to prove that he was faking his seizures. This guy basically was doing all this because he was relishing all the attention he got immediately after the accident and didn't want it to end. Some people that fake seizures honestly don't know they're doing it, but in this case he did.

I have a feeling the lady in the news article knew she was faking.

I think DBK knows he's faking, too. He could get up any time. =)

Some people just don't understand that some things, like the age of consent, need to be arbitrated for lack of a better alternative. Those people are babyfuckers.

Yeah...insurance money.

I see people fake shit all the time just to get the money.....or the drugs.... :confused

Nobody can tell "for sure" if someone is in pain or not.

All you have to do is be really good at lying.

Well in these cases it's not a problem of pain or such, it's just a problem with seizures. When they're diagnosed with seizures all they get in return is a seizure drug, which aside from sometimes making someone tired or thirsty really does nothing for a person aside from taking away seizure symptoms. As for money, no one would get anything monetary-wise out of a seizure disorder unless they go through a diligent process of diagnostically proving not only that they have seizures but that they're intense and debilitating enough that they're unable to work. Now there are quite a few people that try to come in and tell you they're having symptoms and such but don't actually fake the seizures in order to get disabililty; but the only problem with their thinking is that there's no way to fake brainwaves. As for the ones that actually fake the phsyical aspect, well that's just showing that they're that much more messed in the head (or more "dedicated to the cause", which can go hand in hand), they still can't fake the seizure electrically. In summary, it's basically impossible to get disability for a seizure disorder without actually having real-to-life seizures.

Now as for this man, his case was unique, and I can see what you're saying applying better to his circumstances. He was in a car accident that apparently paralyzed him from the waist down. I believe that originally, either because of pain or otherwise, this man was in a sense paralyzed, or more specifically suffering from paresis (incomplete paralysis). The thing is, with paresis a patient can the majority of the time recover their motor function. In my opinion, what happened was this man suffered from paresis and tried to milk it as opposed to going through the therapy. His "paralysis" was becoming questionable by the doctors (hence the ordering of the lower-extremity test), and he was receiving less attention from his wife. So he created another problem, the seizures.

Sad but true, these "fakers" are very stereotypical. You can for the most part write down a history before even seeing the patient and be like 90% accurate. Typically they're females in their mid 30's, either experiencing distancing in their marriage or just had a baby, and are searching not only for the attention that they've recently lost a hold of, but also for someone to feel sympathy for them and to listen to their problems. They also tend to jump from doctor to doctor (usually they've already been to about 5-8 by the time they get to ya) looking for the one that will eventually give them the answer that they seek.

So basically what you need to do with these patients is record them on video/audio while convincing them to have a seizure. It takes a lot of "mind-fucking", but I've never failed at that task. Once they have their "seizure" not only do you have it on the EEG but you have their act on video to coincide with it. That way there's no denying that they had their "seizure" at that time. You'd be surprised at what some people think they can get away with calling seizures. Some of them frankly are quite hilarious, but you have to stand there with a straight face even when some lady's holding her arm in front of her acting like her hand wants to grab her face saying "make it stop!"... anyone with any sort of knowledge in what could possibly happen as a seizure would know much of these things just aren't possible. But eh, such is life on that side of the spectrum... Ok, well I'll stop talking your ear off :p Any questions just ask, I don't mind talking about it.

That is REALLY fascinating, actually. I hope I never end up like that- every time I visit the doctor I feel like i don't *really* need to be there. Even when I had bronchitis last week, I thought I was getting over it, and there's no way to know if the antibiotics really helped. =)

Another lame thing- friends that abandon you for shallow reasons. Sorry for being emo. But that pisses me off.

That is incredibly interesting Rod.

I see this trend in a few girlfriends of mine.

You just made it make sense for me.

I want you as my doctor...What are you anyways? PC? Surgeon? Asst? I know I read it sometime back, but I forget.

you in the HAP circle?

My doctor is a an idiot I think. The ONLY reason I chose her was because she is a family friend. My sister in law was her nanny for years.

She almost killed me with the meds she put me on all at once.
