Michael Moore sued by Iraq war veteran

BOSTON (Reuters) - A U.S. war veteran who lost both arms in Iraq has sued Oscar-winning director Michael Moore for $85 million, saying television clips were used without his permission in the anti-war documentary "Fahrenheit 9/11" and gave a false impression that he opposed the war.

Sgt. Peter Damon, 33, a supporter of President George W. Bush and the Iraq war, claims Moore misused the footage to portray him "in a false light" and as "disagreeing with the president about the war effort and as disagreeing with the war effort itself."

"It was kind of almost like the enemy was using me for propaganda. What soldier wants to be involved in that?" Damon told CBS's local television news affiliate. "I didn't lose my arms over there to come back and be used as ammunition against my commander-in-chief."

In a suit that also names Miramax Films Corp. and several other film companies, Damon says Moore never sought his consent for using segments of an NBC Nightly News interview with Damon while he was in hospital.

Sure took the guy long enough to react.

And $85 million? People are insane. And I don't mean just Mr. Damon. You stepped on my pinky so I want money.

Correct me if I'm wrong... but doesn't the media company that did the interview own the footage?

Speaking of the media, they take things out of context all the time. Not that it's right but I don't see them getting sued.

He also got sued by the newspaper that he doctored in the film where he used a letter to the editor as an actual front page article to which he "photoshopped" the dates on.

Put it this way, Michael Moore likes to play loose with the facts and uses fancy editing to make people look like they are saying things that they aren't really saying.

See Trey parker and Matt Stone for more info (they have lots of issues with their appearance in 'Bowling for Columbine')

The pissed off anti-war americans really need a better spokesperson. I agree with the above posts about MM going to unnecessary lengths to make shit look worse than it is. Sigh.

On my more paranoid days, sometimes I wonder if he's in cahoots with the republican machine... "Here's a zillion dollars. Now make Democrats look really, really stupid."

It may have taken so long because the guy got his arms blown off. I can't imagine filling out all those legal filings with my toes.

Michael Moores message is usually lost because Michael Moore is delivering it...

Nobody can see the message with him in front of it.

C'mon... The movie came out when? 3 years ago? If he was so indignant, it seems like he would have done something sooner. And I'm not saying MM was right to twist what he said, I just smell a motive other then what he states. Either money or politics.

Dude... Did you loose you funny bone? That was a joke. but in true response... I can think of 85million reasons an armless man might want to sue someone.

wait a minute here dude, be fair, and respectuful - this is a war vet - somone who's stood where you have not - someone who deals with the end result of public servitude where you do not. Someone who carries the war and its long term after effects with him for the rest of his life......where you do not.

Please (said in respect because I like you) do not reduce that with a statement like "you stepped on my pinky......"

He did his time, did his tour, paid his dues, it's more than a pinky. Also note that whatever length of time it took him is his right. They guy's been sorta busy I'd think, what with losing his limbs and all. And perhaps he's had some head trips to work out, having been through a war and all. And perhaps still - he had some conflict about going after Michael Moore and the rest of the suits behind him. Perhaps he did not have a big paper bag full of cash in the closet to get himself ready for another war. Perhaps his body and psyche were exhausted from the "other" war he came home from. Perhaps we're not him and just dont know....

Michael Moore does indeed stretch things as it suits his needs. I think he's talented and has a right to speak his mind. I also think he uses the same propoganda methods as his enemies.

85 Million? yeah, thats alot of money. Maybe its inteded to cause harm, to cause hurt, to cripple or at least maim the opposition. These days - how do you hurt the giants?

There's only one way: in the wallet.

So swing big. 85 million big. It makes a whole lot of sense to me.

ANd your right about the media - and I wish at times they DID get sued because of the shit they pull. AH yes.....but freedom of the press......freedom of speech.....no freedom of course for the oppressed, shut the fuck up and take it allready - were the mighty channel 7 you peasent.....

I dont know if I agree with it. But I do know Mr. Moore should be as accountable as those he accuses. If its all bullshit - that will be shown in court. If its not, and the guy has a case - I hope he fucks Michael Moore and his funders hard in the ass with no lube.

I personally, as Veteran - hate the thought of Michael Moore representing me. And I'm not even a desert storm veteran as some of you in here are. Do you really want Michael Moore as your collective voice?

Or he may just be like my dad, my dad has yet to see the movie along with several other people that i know. They simply refuse to see the movie on principle. My dad could be in that movie and not ever know it.

I don't understand people who refuse to see or read something on "principle." It's not like he'd be supporting the producers if he rented it from a video store. People that are worried about being "brainwashed" should probably expose themselves to as many varied sources as possible.

That said... I rented the movie with a girlfriend once. We both got bored out of our minds.

Whats to understand? If you know something is complete and total bullshit... why bring it into your life.

You don't know something is complete and utter bullshit until you observe it and make the judgement for yourself.

you've never not seen a movie because you knew it was crap from the trailers??? you've never trusted the opions of others, whose opinons have earned your trust???

Moore made the movie. It goes without saying that it's made up of lies and half truths because thats what Moore does.

I'm thinking I'm going to be moving to AZ, soon! Can't wait! I friggin' love it here! The heat doesn't bother me at all and the best part? NO SNOW!!! (S.N.O.W. - Shit  No One Wants)   Been staying in Bullhead City where the kids and grandkids live. Next, we're going to the wife's cousin's which is a ways North of Kingman, in the middle of nowhere, where we actually plan to move.   I really like Bullhead. It's a nice little town. Not overcrowded like Colorado Springs has become, at all. Very light traffic, reasonable prices on everything, low taxes, etc. The river offers a lot to do, with a lot of beaches and campgrounds all around it.   But yeah even though we've been over 110º-115º F just about every day,  I can handle it!  What I can't handle anymore, is snow and being cold. Just tired of it. Give me the desert over a blizzard any day!

Nope, we wasn't doing anything. I didn't want to go by myself.  I ended up doing karaoke here. It would of been a perfect day to go, though.
