Heh...kinda like my first name. Every girl born between the year 1984-1986 has my first name...it's horrible.

And it's an UGLY name at that. HORRIBLE name...nothing pretty sounding about it.

Nah, I don't think it's a bad name at all! I actually like it, I just got sick of having so many people with that name in my class. It's not so common anymore, though, because I don't think I have had any Jennifers in any of my elementary school classes.

I must say that I'd choose Jennifer over Madison or Mackenzie any day!

This just shows how names go through cycles. I think a lot of people have an "Aunt Betty" or an "Uncle Bob," and they're all pretty much the same age. My Aunt Betty said that back in her school days, there were a ton of girls who shared her name. Then that name went out of style and something else replaced it.

Anyway, I'm sorry to hijack the thread. Back to weird names... I'm the person who likes to avoid trends like that. I'd name my kid something that's somewhat unique, but not freakish. I would name my kid something like Rhiannon, not Picabo. And yes, for those of you who don't know, there is actually a famous skier named Picabo (peek-a-boo) Street. It really is for your kid's own good that you don't give him or her some off-the-wall name. School kids are mean and won't hesitate to harass them over something as lame as that.

Gotta love southern families....if I had been a boy I would have been Cleo Laverne. God, thank you for my va-jayjay.

But what about that couple in australia that was going to name thier kid 4-real. The hospital wouldn't let them...because no numbers allowed...they made a big stink about it. "Thats my kid...4-Real. No, really."

Frank Zappa was good at naming his kids Moonunit,Dweezal, etc.etc

I remember hearing about that on the news! I'm glad for the kid's sake that they weren't allowed to go through with that. Just imagine having that name. I'd probably really hate both of my parents.

There was an actress from a long time ago named Mercedes McCambridge. Worst name I heard was a southern couple wanting to name their daughter chlamydia (sp?) because is sounded like a pretty flower.

Before that movie came out. Damien was tied to Saints, Not evil.

But then again my kids first and middle name have a meaning together.

Merlin Drake and Odin Sage.

And as for school. My kids go to a school with ppl from all over the world.

(like Asia, Mex, Middle East, and europe. A bit do not even know english)

They have some of the most crazest and kick ass names I ever heard.

Unlike most now adays.

Some people like old names.

Does not mean they are a freak cuz it.

Don't forget what is uncommon to ppl in the US.

Is common in other places.

Like my friend Rhunn is from Australia.

He told us that his name is fairly common over there.

Have you guys ever noticed that women's names tend to go in cycles much more so than men's? There are some trendy men's names, but I think males are much likely to be named after a father or other family member, regardless of the generation. The common men's names: Robert, Richard, William, John, Michael, Charles, Daniel, Donald etc. I've met men/boys of every age with those names. Women's go much more in phases.

Emily, for example. I know a lot of women my grandma's age named Emily, and a lot of females 21 and under named Emily. Very few around my mom's age. Same with Sophia, most of the Sophias I've met are very old or very young.

It's much easier to guess a woman's general age based on her name that it is a man's.

I actually was going to be Lindsey Marie....

I knew a girl named Tequila, when i was in the 3rd grade.......

I wanted to name my first daughter Raven Mackenzie (two names I LOVE!)lol

haven't settled on a boy's name.... i WAS going to use "Damion" but spelled different, but i see that SO many ppl have that name... lol

but yeah, my Grandmother's middle name is Vorice (Vor-eece).

i remember reading fiction and non-fiction stories where males had names like "Stacy" and "Ashley" things like that, and women had real fancy names. Like Anastasia, or Drusilla or Josephine...

More recently, I knew a girl named Emily. not strange, right?......it was spelled Emmalee!

I didnt name any of my kids....LOL but if is had another girl (that would be NEVER) id name her Raven Lee just always loved that name.

anyways my mother and father couldent of been any more creative when they named me and my brother *rolls eyes*

my parents were April and John... me and my brother are April jr and John jr..... and to top it off my grandpa, and uncle are named john as well so at x-mas when we all got together is was either little April or Big April, and well with the johns it was a mess LOL.

Also when I was a kid one of my bestfriends was named June, so you had April and June. I also new in grade school twins named August and September.... and when I worked at the car rental company I had a boss with the last name of Benz so ofcorse he named his daughter Mercedes.

i know a few nurses also with names like Traynay, and tazineia (sp?) lol

Mercedes is a common Spanish name... but it comes from the Latin word mercedem... which still means mercy

Dang, LillyLu, you ceretainly have met some people with interesting names!

Today I had a girl named "Cayce" instead of Casey, and there was also a girl named "Sindi" instead of Cindy. Like I said before, I'm seeing more and more people try to be creative with name spellings.

Names given with meaning behind them are most interesting to me -- for a reason, with a real story behind it.

Different spellings can be cool, unique. Old world names are pretty sweet.

I always thought the name Mike Oxbig was funny. Yes, hard to believe he made it in the real estate business.

Hmm, notable ones go too.

Wun Hung Lo

Eta Snatch

Hairy Balls

Wee Lo

And a bunch more, just ask me sometime.

Oh I'd love to have the name Jennifer actually. People will always accidentally call me Jennifer, it's seriously a phenomena that's been happening since I was little, and sometimes I won't correct them because... I HATE my name! It's so ugly. Jennifer would be a nice name though...my roommate (Jadnifer's) name is Jennifer.

We both start with J's . But I usually don't give out my first name because that's how much I detest it.

In high school, back when I was still just a boy, I just had everyone call me Jay.

Yeeeap...my middle name is Jayne, which is why I wish my middle name was my first name.

See...and the fact that people used to call me Jay...I got it from the first part of my middle name.

Oh hell, I forgot:

My Aunt Becky runs a floral design / event decorator kinda business out of the home. One time back in the 90's she had a female client who wanted my aunt to do some Christmas event for her or something.

NOW...this woman was married and her married last name became "Dick".

What was her first name that was given to her at birth?

SHARON

So this woman had such bad karma she ended up with the name Sharon Dick (say it aloud if you don't get it).

True story.

Also, their neighbors across the street, the family to the right had the last name "Harry" and the ones next to them had the last name "Cucci (pron. Coochie)".

So they lived across the street from the Harry/Cucci families .

My real name is Phyllis, no longer all that common and definitely doesn't match my personality. My sister's name is Winnetta (when.net.ta) and aunt's name is Wynnona. Pretty much all of my dad's side has similar names. I don't consider any of our names weird.

Sharin dick lol

K worked at a mortgage company once and came across the name: Bruce Balls.

He also knew this guy in Southfield named Moss Green.

I know an Adonis now.

Apple? Oh. Suri? Sounds like a hindu guru.

I hear some weird shit and it was starting in the 80s

like taking Natasha and inventing Latasha.

One kid in the nusery when my kids were born was name Mercedes........hello...is your brother Volvo?

Now this: I just saw in print K'mari...I speed read a bit and thought her name was K'mart.....heh......is Target on the way?

I remember seeing a Simpsons episode where good ol Homer says: ' I will name my kid Bart, so he won't get picked on.....nothing rymes with Bart!'

Fart tart cart mart start yah

It's a cultural thing, we like to be creative. Also has roots in slavery times; slaveholders often gave enslaved people non-standard names... some would have everyone on their plantation named to a theme like Greek or Roman mythology. And, since the ancestors were not exactly given any in-depth schooling in the mainstream culture, they didn't feel any constraints to give their children "real" names... instead they chose names that had some kind of personal meaning. And the tradition has held through the generations. My grandmother's names were America and Blondelle; my godmother & her sister were Friendly & I-Love. Nowadays you find the creative naming more in lower income families, partly because families like mine are more conscious of the ways a "racially coded" name can be a barrier to success.

My current class list: (5th graders, all black, almost all from low-income families)

Girls: Birdie, Ashley, Jazmyne, Ariel, Jamesha, Talarra, Malaika

Boys: John (from Liberia), Darrell, Dequaireus, Alex, Jeronte, Tejuan, Shaquille, Keivoun, Demonta (that's a long /a/ BTW), D'andre, Emeka (from Nigeria), Juwon, Jalill, Jacari

I dunno... I kind of like it better than when I was subbing out in the hinterlands last year, and you'd get all these classes with multiple Jasons, Hannahs, Carsons, Kayleighs, Caitlins, Megans, Joshes, Codys and so on. There were almost always at least 2 same-name kids in any given classroom.

BTW, Mercedes as a name predates the car (as does Porsche/Portia), and is actually quite common in Spanish-speaking cultures. However, there is no excuse for naming your child Lexus or Nautica.

i work in a photography studio and 98% of my clients are 3 and under. ive heard all kinds of crazy names, everything from 2 months olds beeing named 90 year old names, takeing a name like kerry and spelling it cherriey, ive had kids named from letters, for example i had a kid the other day named q just q not as a nickname but a real name. ive had girls named La and boys named trisha. ive had kids named after cars, citys, and yes even power tools. then there are the Ja'queveana's and the Devonaharem's and shit that i cant spell. and do you think these kids get nicknames heck no nothing easy for strangers to pronounce. . .ever. oddly enough the most normal name ive heard in a while was from a group family (mom and dad had a girl who ended up beeing daddys girlfriend and haveing his baby among other things) their kids name was scott

I'm thinking I'm going to be moving to AZ, soon! Can't wait! I friggin' love it here! The heat doesn't bother me at all and the best part? NO SNOW!!! (S.N.O.W. - Shit  No One Wants)   Been staying in Bullhead City where the kids and grandkids live. Next, we're going to the wife's cousin's which is a ways North of Kingman, in the middle of nowhere, where we actually plan to move.   I really like Bullhead. It's a nice little town. Not overcrowded like Colorado Springs has become, at all. Very light traffic, reasonable prices on everything, low taxes, etc. The river offers a lot to do, with a lot of beaches and campgrounds all around it.   But yeah even though we've been over 110º-115º F just about every day,  I can handle it!  What I can't handle anymore, is snow and being cold. Just tired of it. Give me the desert over a blizzard any day!
