I don't know how true this is, but someone at work was telling me she heard of a woman who named her son, "Nosmo King." I thought it was cool, until she pointed out that it was really just "No Smoking." WTF?

And Morbid, I actually heard a contibuter's name on NPR annouced as "Harry Balsy." If my last name were something like "Balsy," "Balls," "Cucchi," or "Butts," I would have changed that business a long time ago. Why torture yourself!?!

I do like unusual names, though.

I don't plan on having kids myself, but I've always fancied the names Valek, Volana, Drago, Viggo, Daegyn ( I see a pattern, lol), Corvinus, Anahi, and my favorite.....Lucienne.

My first Child (R.I.P.) was to be Miklos Dimitri.

If I end up with a girl...it will be Mercadia Elizabeth (just kinda rolls off the tounge)....and the first son...to make it THROUGH the birth (don't ask..please...I will tell you..but I would rather not), will be Hades Grigori...cuz how cool would it be to have a kid named HADES...comon!!

i wish i was one of frank zappas children

with Moon Unit, Dweezil, Ahmet, and Diva

his response was;

"People make a lot of fuss about my kids having such supposedly 'strange names'. But the fact is that no matter what first names I might have given them, it is the last name that is going to get them in trouble"

personally id rather have a unique name than a first name where if someone calls another by the same name you instantly look up, it doesnt help to have an extremly common last name that people tend to use as well that also makes you look up

NEVER EVER EVER get your kids names out of a baby book!

instead watch an excessive amount of cheesy sci-fi flicks =)

Before that movie came out. Damien was tied to Saints, Not evil.

But then again my kids first and middle name have a meaning together.

Merlin Drake and Odin Sage.

And as for school. My kids go to a school with ppl from all over the world.

(like Asia, Mex, Middle East, and europe. A bit do not even know english)

They have some of the most crazest and kick ass names I ever heard.

Unlike most now adays.

Some people like old names.

Does not mean they are a freak cuz it.

Don't forget what is uncommon to ppl in the US.

Is common in other places.

Like my friend Rhunn is from Australia.

He told us that his name is fairly common over there.

I went to a summer day camp run by a Catholic school once, called Camp Damien... named after Father Damien, a priest who was famous for his work with leprosy victims at the Molokai (Hawaii) leper colony.

And yeah, it's pretty funny for a bunch of goth kiddies & assorted freakoids to be tsk-ing about names that aren't "normal"!

I am part Mexican and there is a slang term for a female child who cries and whines in excess to the point of being dramatic : Chiyonna. My aunt made the remark to her daughter in Spanish at a restaurant several years ago so people wouldn't know what it truly meant while she was reprimanding her. The women at the next table over heard and remarked what a beautiful name it was. My aunt still gets a kick out of that incident.

I think if a woman suffers the ordeal of child birth and carrying the baby for 9 months, she should be able to name her baby whatever she wants to. I'm not one to give much concern to what a complete stranger thinks of my child's name. Personally, If I would have had a child, I would not have chose a common name. My name is extremely uncommon so, I think it's nice in a way. I also would not have chosen a name until I had been with my baby for a few days, to get a feel for their little personality. Although, of course it will change many times over within their lives.

I think the most unique name I have ever heard is the son of one my cousin's friends: Armani for her son, after the designer. :)

Emily, for example. I know a lot of women my grandma's age named Emily, and a lot of females 21 and under named Emily. Very few around my mom's age. Same with Sophia, most of the Sophias I've met are very old or very young.

My oldest daughter is named Emily. She will be 9 next month.

All through my pregnancy they told me she was a boy. Her name was to be Lucas Mathieu. When she was born and she was a girl -- I was clueless. First time mom, I had NO IDEA what to do. It took two days to come up with her name ... and I really had no idea what to name her. I just took something old that I liked and one of my friends growing up middle name because I liked it. I named her Emily LeAnn. In 1999, Emily was the top name according to the SSA. That was the first year it came back. I was so bummed. It's been either on or the second or third name since then.

My other kids are Ashley Marie (her Dad named her), Austin James (we decided on that one together) and Elijah Alexander (I named him). Austin's middle name is his Dad's middle name. Other than that, my kids aren't named after anyone.

My name would have been Siobhan (Irish, said like Chevon) but they couldn't spell it.

You know that lady that comes around and records your kids names...they pressured me to have one ready like they were afraid of one 'getting away' I think the government is afraid I might breed an army of people with no record or S.S. numbers.

Wait until they start chipping us hell it wouldn't surprise me if they do while the babes still in the womb.
