i think everyone who is physically able SHOULD serve 4 years of their lives for their country

if that were the case draft would not be necessary

i have always had knee and ankle problems, but thought about it when i was still able to run long distances

and although i love to fly, i am slightly color blind so...it was never a choice for me, airforce would be mine, flying

You speak ancient greek?

Sorry, had to do it ;)

Also, I'd like to point out that mandatory public service would not necessarily mean combat, or even military, service.

I honestly wonder if the dems want the draft reinstated so bad, because they know the military is 99% republican (facetious) and want to introduce a lil liberalism into it without seeming to advocate the military (bad for socioliberalcommiepinkos!).

i honestly cannot come up with any other viable reason for their hardon for the draft.

No, but the Bible was not written in Greek. It was written in Ancient Hebrew and Aramaic. I don't speak or read either of those either, but there are many scholars that do and that have written many texts on the Bible. It's not hard to find literal translations and compare them to the versions that exists today.

i can see it now "black people who serve gets crappy jobs, white people get all the important jobs." im sure someone whould make a big deal out of this if any mandatory survice came up.

The military's not even the most of it. Obama's been openly saying for a long time now that the central element of his plan to make college education available to everyone is the mandatory service aspect. You get your schooling paid for in return for a committment to service in your community.

Doesn't the military already pay for your college...?

Yes.

What he wants to do is make it so that if you want Federal loans/grants you have to do some kind of National Serivce to get it.

I'd prefer, as do many others, to not changing the Word of God. It's murder, just like the most ancient of writings have it. Not some modern translation designed to give more poower to the almighty Church.

...but..if a Catholic is TRUELY a "Good Catholic"...that means they hold to the decrees of the Pope...RIGHT? :yes

...SO...they don't:

use condoms

or birth control

NOR will they advocate abortion (in any way)(FOR ANY REASON)

...& since the text was changed (for whatever reason) BEFORE America was even FOUND (by the masses) you can not send a Catholic to war, if he does not want to go.

...& that does not even count the Hindi & Buddhist population; now does it? (let alone the Sufi...or Baha'i.)

(edit to add: So sorry I did not get to this reply sooner...{hectic weekend})

personally, any christian in the military is failing in his duties as a christian.. but then, that's happened all through history.

turn the other cheek, remember?

matthew 18:

8Wherefore if thy hand or thy foot offend thee, cut them off, and cast them from thee: it is better for thee to enter into life halt or maimed, rather than having two hands or two feet to be cast into everlasting fire.

9And if thine eye offend thee, pluck it out, and cast it from thee: it is better for thee to enter into life with one eye, rather than having two eyes to be cast into hell fire.

Yup...this is why I NEVER call me a "Christian"...if someone punches me...they get a black eye...or a good kick..OR BOTH...depends on how much/ if it "hurt"..

IMHO, conscription is inimical to a free society. I am (ostensibly) a free man with the freedom to decide my own course in life.

I thought most of the New Testament was written in ancient Greek...?

And Latin.

Martin Luther's translation of the Bible into German as well as Gutenberg's printing press really helped bring the Word to the people. Luther struggled to find the right words for the translation and wasn't happy with much of what he eventually decided upon. That is why if one really wants to read the Bible, they should get the Concordia or Zondervan study Bible and/or a study guide to go with it. For example, in English, we only have one word for "love" but the Greeks had four. Knowing which definition was intended goes a long way in understanding the message.

When Christ told the people to turn the other cheek, he was referring to the act of revenge. He had no problem with self-defense however and in fact encouraged it in several places even commanding his disciples to sell their cloaks and buy swords if they didn't already have one.

Thats what you get for thinking. Greek was the first language it was translated into.

YES.

Was written in Aramaic, mostly, & partially Greek, & a bit in Latin...then was translated into languages from Latin, sadly not Greek. It was a 'better' source... as you kinda' need to know Hebrew & Greek & Latin to understand Aramaic, as it is highly fluidic (like Modern English, full of other languages).

:secret:

(but you don't have to be so mean Gaf.)

idiology obama whould support mandatory survice. how is that not one step to socialism. it depends largely on how many free market advocates there are to vote it down. which is on the lower end. the army is run bye people who want to be in the army. same with all the good goverment jobs. mandatory survice whould not be advanced stuff. it be the smaller jobs. you wont be a fireman, working at the police station. working on coast guard. nope it will be petty shit to get a grant that will mean you finally get to pay taxes which will pay back that grant in full and then some.

im much more for opening up more early internship styled training. allow some of these courses to be ran bye companies, payed for bye companies. but without these restrictions so high to get the internship

isnt that how things where a long time ago, people worked for a master of a trade, and thus got valuable information in the field there after.

Forcing people to die for crooked politicians and CEOs is not right, leave it as "voluntary"remember what happened with Vietnam.I signed up for selective service when I turned 18, 20 years ago it was required.

It is still required that at 18 guys have to register with selective service.

I love how Obama keeps saying it's voulenteering. How the fuck is it voulenteering if the person is being forced? It's like high school around here requireing so many hours of community service to graduate.

Thank you for so graciously correcting my misapprehension of the facts.

Nobody is putting a gun to a person's head to get the grant, right? It's a choice to apply for the grant. That's pretty much voluntary...

I think one of the things that makes our military so unique and strong is its entirely voluntary nature.

So.. kicking everyone's ass in WW2 with a conscripted military was not a show of strength? Granted, there was in a motivating force in the attacks on Pearl Harbor and American shipping interests in the Atlantic by Germany.

I am against it MOSTLY for the reason that some people have Spiritual tenets that they ACTUALLY follow...

..to draft these peoples would be against the Constitution, as I see it..

..as it is a "Sin" or "Taboo" in their Spiritual Set to join a War machine.. EVEN on the rear line as a cook..

The service doesn't need to be military. Think domestic peace corps. Service within the local community or one that's elsewhere in the country where you might learn a thing or two.

I don't see how these are bad things except within the framework of people being lazy and selfish.

Well if you can't get scholarships, and you can't afford to pay for school any other way, applying for student loans are the only other option.

College is a choice. Like it or not. It is. And yeah, I get that you're not likely to go far (at least being employed by someone other then yourself) without it.

How about this: Would you rather have to pay all that cash back for years or get your obligation over with in a couple and have something positive to put on your resume to boot? Oh... And maybe do some worthwhile things for your country.

I don't get how so many people are great patriots for this country yet they barely lift a finger to do something positive for it.

The money to put all these "volunteers" through school would come from tax money. That means more and higher taxes. If we did away with the vampiric Federal Reserve, we could let people keep ALL their income and be able to afford school on their own, instead of paying trillions of dollars in interest for money Congress should be issuing on its own. This talk of layering on more Socialism/Corporatism/Fascism makes me want to scream.

And yes, I'll fight to the death to ensure your freedom to choose to sit on your ass and not lift a finger for your country. We've gotten so far away from the vision the Founding Fathers had for this country, it's ridiculous.

I actually wanted to go into the Navy but my mental illness kinda killed that plan.

This country will utterly fail BECAUSE of that laziness. People in this country treat freedom as this right to destroy the earth, fuck over their neighbor and do as they please without consequence. You think THAT's what the founding fathers had in mind? I'm sick to death of people treating the the vision of the founding fathers as some unalterable statement of fact.. like they were infallible. The basic concepts are good, no doubt, but they need to be able to evolve over time or ideas that meant something at the time become irrelevant.
