Miranda Posted August 24, 2008 Posted August 24, 2008 In order to stay on topic, I'll just say as a former smoker; Smokers do not bother me. I used to smoke off and on for about 10 years. I quit 15 years ago. I am not bothered if people smoke near me. Most people will ask me if it is alright if they smoke, if I am eating and they have finished. If I leave a bar, my clothes stays in a plastic bag until I can launder it. It doesn't smell that great over time but I don't think people who smoke should be grilled. Many things we as people do are harmful to us. Everybody has a crusade I suppose. People need to remember that just because you quit, the fact that you did smoke before puts you at risk of going back to it. I get cravings for cigarettes often, especially when I drink. I'll be the last one to judge another person for something like smoking. Most people don't want to smoke, it is an addiction.
cptdeath Posted August 24, 2008 Posted August 24, 2008 i'm allergic to them. my father smoked six packs of newport a day for 11 years. he had a yellow ring around his eyes like a racoon. he died last year at 52. i don't hate cigeretes. i can't help i'm allergic. if some one has that smell on them my eyes water nose clogs and somehow leaks like a faucet, my eyes and face sting. it's worse when im confined in a room with lots of smokers. but i spend alot of time around smoke. growing up i was the snotty kid who was allways sick.

I think this is the most I have ever heard of anyone smoking. My condolences on your father's passing.
graverobber Posted August 24, 2008 Posted August 24, 2008 So are fat people, but I don't see anyone trying to ban fat people from eating all they want or forcing them to exorcise. that's right man, let's teach fat people how to smoke Camel non filters, 'here fatso, everytime you want to open up the fridge, grab one of these'
asphyxian_doll Posted August 24, 2008 Author Posted August 24, 2008 A hefty 30% tip to my waitress (I was a waitress once, and half-of-minimum-wage doesn't cut it for an hourly) in cash, so that she has the option of not declaring all of it. I am a smoker and have been off and on for 11 years now. I am fully aware of the health risks and know that my respiratory and circulatory systems have been impacted by years of ingestion of toxic fumes. I do my best to try to minimize the impact on those around me. I try not to litter my butts, try to keep smoking in public places to a minimum except in those few (and dwindling) public places that support it (like one restaurant, one coffeehouse, and one club that I know of). Even so, I am likely to ask the people I am near if lighting up will bother them and seek out open spaces in fairer weather. I have quit smoking many times. 18 months at the longest, 2 months at the shortest, so I know it can be done. My reasons for going back are psychological--I use the stimulant properties of the cigarettes to maintain alertness and as a counter to my tendency toward depressive mood cycles. I am not throwing it out there as an excuse. I just want to make it clear that for some of us, despite our knowledge, despite our self-awareness, despite a real desire for a happiness and longevity, tobacco continues to have a real grip on us. Please, don't attack us for being stupid or weak. Many of us are neither. I have a tendency to be defensive because so frequently persons who oppose smoking are offensive. If it is really your desire to help, some of the sentiments expressed thus far are really more helpful than indignation. Particularly, share more of how you quit and what keeps you from starting again. I like too, expressions of concern and support. When I do quit again, and for good, those sentiments will keep me on the non-smoking path much better than your derision. Thank you. Attacking the habit is one thing, the person is another. I did no such thing. The excuses are endless i know....but i still say....cigarettes are useless, and pretty harmful to me, I'm allergic to them, i developed the allergies by smoking. The endless amount of chemicals in them should be enough to "help" you make up your mind. It may be offensive because it is the truth. And the truth hurts, but being honest is NOT being mean. *sticks to guns like supa glue*
asphyxian_doll Posted August 24, 2008 Author Posted August 24, 2008 I refuse to believe that you had a cigarette addiction for 4 years ... & quit cold turkey... IF YOU DID YOU WOULD SEE IT'S ALLURE... which you clearly stated that you did not. You don't have to believe shit.....Lying isn't my forte, so your accusations are empty. end of this discussion. "cigs are a waste mmmkay"
Gaf The Horse With Tears Posted August 24, 2008 Posted August 24, 2008 Attacking the habit is one thing, the person is another.I did no such thing. You may have a reaction to it, but it's not an allergic reaction. It's one of those "facts" you accused me and others of ignoring.
asphyxian_doll Posted August 24, 2008 Author Posted August 24, 2008 P.S. You don't have to be so MEAN ALL THE TIME!People don't like it. Mean is saying "grow a fucking brain and try to use it" being honest....is easily misconstrued as mean. "waa" k now thats mean. honesty is usually something not many come by, and for you to accuse me as a liar is "ignorant"(not stupid...., pretty vast difference) look up these words and try to be civil. kthx because i am. Not just smoked.. but smoked 2.5 packs of cloves a day... Clove cigs have far less nicotine in them than normal cigs... They are far less addictive than normal cigs... but they are addictive. The point is, you can give up Cloves cigs easier than normal cigs. Point is...cigarettes are shit, the people who smoke them are trapped in this addiction of said shit, and you can quit. I find it odd how its so hard to believe that someone can have enough will power to quit cold turkey such as i did. don't believe me....Im not losing sleep, just shows how naive people can be.

It's one of those "facts" you accused me and others of ignoring. Ok sure, tell me what MY allergies are. Do you expect me to take anything you say now seriously?
asphyxian_doll Posted August 24, 2008 Author Posted August 24, 2008 Reeeeeaaalllllly????? Just because YOU smoked to be cool.....When you where, what, like 13.....Does not mean the rest of us did..... You should not be so judgmental, it is not very attractive..... The reason why to chose to start smoking has nothing to do with my point. Im only judging the nature of the habit, and the naive responses i always tend to get. I'm not really that worried about you finding me attractive. thanks?
Gaf The Horse With Tears Posted August 24, 2008 Posted August 24, 2008 Ok sure, tell me what MY allergies are. Do you expect me to take anything you say now seriously? Wow. I am not telling you what your allergies are. I am telling you that your can not be allergic to smoke. It's physically impossible. Smoke is an irritant, not an allergen. That means you can have a reaction to it, but it's not an allergic reaction. Perhaps you should read up on allergens.
asphyxian_doll Posted August 24, 2008 Author Posted August 24, 2008 No. There is nothing in smoke to be allergic to. and No. correct would be "Smoke irritates my lungs and respatory tract, causing my actual allergys to worsen until I move away from the smoke. If I did not have an existing condition, smoke would have little to no affect on me." There are thousands of other things you are exposed to everyday that are worse for you than second hand smoke. really nothing in smoke? give me a list of the ingredients and ill point out what im allergic to! thousands of toxins. wtf are you seriously trying to prove?
phee Posted August 24, 2008 Posted August 24, 2008 (Keep it civil people.... lets not smoke the thread)
Gaf The Horse With Tears Posted August 24, 2008 Posted August 24, 2008 Ok sure, tell me what MY allergies are. Do you expect me to take anything you say now seriously? and no, I don't expect you to take anything I say seriously. I expect you to hold tight to your views and ignore reality. I expect you to keep being rude and obnoxious to anyone that disagrees with your view. Thats OK though, I expect that from all kids your age.
Gaf The Horse With Tears Posted August 24, 2008 Posted August 24, 2008 Acetone Cyanide Aluminum DDT/Dieldrin Ammonia Ethenol Arsenic Formaldehyde Benzene Hydrogen cyanide Butane Lead Cadmium Methanol Carbon monoxide Nicotine Carbon dioxide Tar Chloroform Vinyl Chloride those are the major chemicals in the smoke... which one of these non-allergens are you somehow allergic to?
asphyxian_doll Posted August 24, 2008 Author Posted August 24, 2008 and no, I don't expect you to take anything I say seriously. I expect you to hold tight to your views and ignore reality. I expect you to keep being rude and obnoxious to anyone that disagrees with your view.Thats OK though, I expect that from all kids your age. I don't ignore reality. My views are for the most part pretty realistic. I don't really care what you think, you have already proven to me that you have no respect for "kids my age" for whatever reason. Its easy to point the finger when a discussion so tangible as this one is going about isn't it? to rehash things. my original point was, cigarettes are harmful, they serve no purpose, honesty isn't being mean, and as for being rude....speak for yourself. "If you pay them enough, they will say whatever you will them to"
phee Posted August 24, 2008 Posted August 24, 2008 Technically smoke IRRITATES allergies....Gaf is correct But it may be splitting hairs a bit (maybe like saying guns don't kill people, fast moving bullets coming from them do...)

Gaf The Horse With Tears Posted August 24, 2008 Posted August 24, 2008 i think it would be closer to say that... Steel does not kill people, but if you shape it into a metal jacket over lead, affix it to a shell full of gun powder and put it in a gun and then fire the gun.. then steel kills people.

Reaper Posted August 24, 2008 Posted August 24, 2008 Common smokers will always defend their habit, even though they know its bad for them. You'll never get past that part. They dont fend for it because they need to support the habit, but only because they feel its a personal attack on what they chose to do.

Guest GodfallenPromos Posted August 24, 2008 Posted August 24, 2008 meh stress....O_ojust go to the health food store and use homeopathy to relieve stress, opposed to poisoning yourself. The truth is, when you start smoking, and develop a nicotine addiction, it isnt stress your smoking for.....you would have been fine, without cigarettes, with all that stress....its the physical addiction, and stress is always the first excuse. i used it.....but you gotta realize you would be just as stressed without it. so, like i said, if it helps you any by my telling you this..... go to dales or a nice health food store, and get some stress pastilles and/or homeopathy pellets. They work wonders, and actually help relieve the effects of stress and prevent future breakdowns with natural endorphins found in plants....which are not addictive. even while your still smoking, i suggest you try it....you might be pleasantly surprised. lol...babes....at 8 pm...when my show is about to start...and the headlining band decided not to show....and another band has a sick member.....I'm not going to run to a health food store and get a bottle of pomegranate juice....I'm gonna chain smoke while wonder WTF the bands were thinking...and the rest of the time running around like a chicken with my head cut off, out smoking a chimney, hoping to the gods that nothing else goes wrong....without the smokes on a concert night....you don't want to see me....cuz I'm nothing but nerves....if anything...I'm a social smoker that REALLY smokes hardcore when things go wrong...
